Does anyone remember a chewing gum called Steelies from the 1980s? I was wondering if they were real or if this article made them up as they are not mentioned anywhere else on the internet and I have never heard anything about them in real life: [https://www.joe.ie/uncategorized/irelands-inappropriate-sweets-9652](https://www.joe.ie/uncategorized/irelands-inappropriate-sweets-9652)

Yeah, I remember them. Smooth and small, around the same size as aniseed balls, but silver.
Kinda looked like big ball bearings
I remember Steelies but they weren’t chewing gum. They were hard sweets that looked like ball bearings.
They were fairly hard and would take a while to soften up.
Funny how the author just assumes it’s a “toxic material” because it looks metallic. I suppose gold leaf is “toxic” too?
“Cola Rola balls” seem to be a thing elsewhere: https://www.toffeeworld.co.uk/product/walkers-silver-cola-rola-balls
They also seem to be conflating candy cigarettes with the fake toy cigarettes that blow smoke, i.e. they haven’t a clue what they’re talking about.
