CD&V approves Flemish budget after all, chairman Sammy Mahdi: “Rather folds than a crisis in Flanders”

  1. Well that was pointless.
So this might have been the final act of Cd&v. They really destroyed themselves. No one will miss them.

  2. With 2 tweets, CD&V president Sammy Mahdi averted a real crisis in the Flemish government. His party will approve a budget proposal that was on the table Monday. It is not yet fully known exactly what that looks like.

“We will approve the budget with all the good measures for child care, the elderly, local middle class …,” Mahdi echoed. “That too cost us blood, sweat and tears. We take our responsibility and all the shit that goes with it. CD&V will not let the Fleming down.”

On Monday, the budget negotiations of the Flemish government ended in a stalemate when it appeared that the government parties could not agree on the indexation of the Growth Package, the former child allowance. CD&V wanted the Growth Package to be linked to the pivot index again, as before. That would mean that the amounts paid out would again follow inflation. N-VA and Open VLD thought that was too expensive and preferred a different approach.

“The Fleming needs support, not chaos. The best support for 1.6 million children remains the index,” Mahdi tweeted. “Unfortunately, we stand alone. The game has been played hard by everyone in recent days. With me, it stops when the prosperity of 6.6 million Flemish people is at stake.”

Mahdi takes responsibility, he says. Even if it means that others consider that as giving in. “Rather fold than that Flanders should be in a crisis,” says the CD&V chairman in “Het Journaal.”

But on the substance of the matter – his desire to link child benefits to the index again – Sammy Mahdi has not changed his mind. “You can’t blame me for trying to fight every day for the Fleming who is struggling today,” he says. “I will keep doing this until I drop.”

  3. I genuinely dont understand Belgian politics. It feels like literally zero people in politics have any form of backbone or credibility. They say shit like ‘THIS IS A REDLINE’ and then instantly give in once they realise their overpaid job might be in danger lmao

  4. This must hurt so much for Madhi. CDV took a stand hoping to walk away with something they could boast about, Connor undercut him by announcing Vooruit would be willing to support the budget instead, so CDV had to fold or simply get bypassed.

Fucked by both sides. Even in de Wetstraat nobody takes CDV seriously anymore.

And once again we’ve seen how eager Connor is to work with NVA. I’m willing to bet a lot on the fact that the next Flemish government will be a NVA – sossen coalition with either CDV or OVLD added to get the needed majority.

  5. The question is, will they continue dragging their feet on Ventilus and nitrogen discussions with farmers?

Because long term they might have a bigger impact than this symbolic measure.

CD&V have really become the obstructionist power in politics.

  6. I’m not suprised this didn’t went through. A big chunk of the biggest govering party voterbase can’t stop thinking that getting a lot of children is some kind of scheme to live of child benefits. “they are breeding like rabbits for child support”
