A working hill fort maybe handy in the coming years , good to see the National Trust is forward planning.
Went up Mam Tor last year, such a ridiculously scenic area. The ride in through the gorge is fantastic too, this will be a great addition!
It’s a lovely walk up there, it’s basically a big hill, half of which has slid off to the side. Fantastic views all around.
I only hope that one day, they restore a part of the old road, so that it’s easier to walk and cycle (no driving) up there, rather than up Winnats Pass.
Parts of it have big 12 inch drops and cracks. It wouldn’t take much to fix.
Mam Tor: Work begins on… ‘fracking.’
Phew that title shit me up for a second.
Used to live near Castleton, we used to go regularly when I was a kid in the 70s. I remember it was “difficult” to park, as in my dad usually had to drive round for 10 minutes to find a parking spot just off the high street. Free, of course.
Last time I visited, probably about 15 years ago, it was absolute hell, you couldn’t even get in because of the mile long queue for the (rather expensive) new car park.
It’s a shame really, but obviously I can’t deny that I was part of the problem as I no longer live locally.
It’s a funny old hill. One night a hundred yard section of the road just quietly slid down the hill. Tarmac, cats eyes and white line all completely intact.
In other news – the boy scouts had a minibus up there one windy day. The wind blew it away!! No scouts were in it.
