I for one have never felt more disconnected and angry at politics than before. I really don’t see the point that any of those at the top deserve my vote. A part of me wants a total meltdown of the system and hopefully the result will be a better one afterwards. But I guess if that will happen then the citizens will be royally screwed as well.
Pretty strong statement (and one I do agree with). And a core problem of current politics that I think no state reform will actually fix.
It’s a correct analysis, but it’s been this way for two decades now. And everyone has been making this analysis for the same time. But it seems politicians can’t help themselves, and they keep digging a deeper hole. Voters get tired of it, and give up or flee to extremist parties. And instead of realizing that this is cause by the behaviour of our politicians, they come to the conclusion that it’s because the extremist parties are yelling their lies very loudly. So the “normal” politicians start doing the same. They equate consensus with defeat: you either completely realize your idea, or everything can burst. Party chairman are starting to see themselves as all powerful rockstars, that are competing for your attention span, instead of just running their party, Bouches is the perfect example of this.
If a single party (apart from VB) would have behaved like this a few decades ago, both the rest of the politicians, and the general public would have discarded that party as a bunch of blowhards. But today people keep voting for those that yell the loudest.
So yes, fuck 90% of our career politicians, but the population carries a part of the blame as well… If suddenly most political parties started to behave constructively tomorrow, would people recognize it and vote for them, or would the keep voting for remaining loud and polarizing parties?
Implying they were ever on the right track…
This is such a big problem in Belgian politics. Very few people have too much power.
could this be solved with term limits for career politicians or a law that states they can’t hold a position in any company in the sector they were minister of? or they have to show all their income to the electorate or something with strong penalties?
What if we actually start holding them acountable for fuck ups and corruption with strong penalties? They get away with more than any one of us would, and don’t say sihame, she was just thrown under the bus because she was starting to become popular, no one wondered about other politicians?
When they fail to meet deadlines they get multiple chances. If a student misses a deadline they are royally fucked, why aren’t they?
Good analyses. Politics in Belgium is dead. If they are not careful, they will pave the road to not only their demise, but democracy in Belgium. Left and right extremists love a weak centre
My 2 cents.
Bart de Wever started importing Anglo-Saxon style politics here with NVA back in the day. This was a very effective and, for us at that time, refreshing way of talking about things. Very open and strongly, but that made that the others had to follow to the point that now they all do the same. Your enemy loosing is even more important than winning, unless it is a clear victory without concessions.
I don’t like it, bit I honestly don’t know how to counter it
