This is from a letter my grandfather wrote to my mom in 1984 while he was a merchant marine. Does anyone know anything about this incident? Our family name was Kubis.

  1. Assassination of Heydrich (by Kubiš, Gabčík but many more were on it), operation Anthropoid, and obliteration of Lidice and Ležáky in return, yeah, everyody here knows this, it’s one of the most (the most?) known nazi cruelty actions in our land.

  2. Yeah, probably almost nobody knows about this outside of Czech Republic and Slovakia. Kids learn about this at school, of course we know.

  3. After the occupation of Czechoslovakia (well, Czechia, Moravia and Silesia, the Slovaks had their own nazi government), Hitler put in charge Konstantin von Neurath, a old school diplomat, who was a nazi, but fairly harmless compared to other nazis.

    However there was a significant armed resistance among the Czech people, so Hitler called Neurath back and in his place put Reinhard Heydrich – among other things the architect of the holocaust. He was super bad, so the czech government in exile with the help of the british military sent Jan Kubiš and Josef Gabčík (with help of others) to assasinate him. They succeeded.

    Understandably the nazis weren’t happy about it and became super cruel. The most famous example of their cruelty was the complete anihilation od the villages Lidice and Ležáky, who’s people allegedly helped the assasins.
