It really has been going on a long time. I remember back in Halloween 2011 and Garda was crushed by a stolen jeep in Cherryorchard. It was a miracle she wasn’t killed.
Closer to 40 years. My parents bought their first house midway between Cherry Orchard and Ronanstown in 1980. We moved away by 1986 as they were sick of hearing the stolen cars every night. And didn’t want my brother and me to grow up in that area.
There’s no consequences for it, is the issue.
Anyone caught joyriding should be made automatically ineligible to ever receive a driving licence, for a start.
Between now and Halloween, teenagers should be getting randomly searched for fireworks. The area should be flooded with gardaí and unaccompanied minors out after dark lifted and their parent contacted to pick them up.
This is the crucial bit, because after a week of the phone ringing every night during Eastenders, maybe some of these parents will realise that they need to start knowing where their children are in the evenings or they’re going to suffer inconvenience for it.
They are behaving this way because at present, they do so with impunity. The guards don’t bother policing these places (I know what’s going to happen there at Halloween, you know what’s going to happen there at Halloween, and the gardaí know what’s going to happen there at Halloween. The difference is, the guards could prevent it and choose not to) because they don’t think the lives of the residents are worth the hassle.
Now the reign of terror has landed at the door of a Garda patrol car, they’re interested.
Yep, it’s a culture.
I think immobilisers would solve most car theft problems. Mandatory on new cars and a requirement to install for insurance older cars
This has been going on for decades, there are no obvious short-term solutions. If you want to see what the future potentially holds for some of these young vagrants. Just look in the courts section of your local newspaper.
There is usually a collection of the same gobshite’s with 40+ previous convictions getting handed suspended sentence after suspended sentence because some psychiatrist wrote a report telling some sob story.
It’s an absolute joke. There is no political will to deal with this situation, as dealing with it properly will take years and politicians only care about the next election, the legal system loves it because it is all state funded, all the medical reports, et cetera are also state funded. To a certain extent, delinquency has become its own industrial complex.
There was a case recently where a scrambler landed on a 1 year old who was sitting on his mothers lap who was sitting on a quad bike in cherry orchard. He told the court that he was driving around cherry orchard for 10 years and was never stopped or had an accident. 10 fucking years.

Just wall it off. It’s a shithole.
And spare me the “tiny minority” bullshit.
