LONDON, Sept 22 (Reuters) – Britain’s University of Cambridge said on Thursday it had benefited from the proceeds of slavery over its history, and promised to expand scholarships for Black students and fund more research into the murderous trade.
The acknowledgement comes as a string of leading institutions – from the Bank of England to the Church of England – have been re-evaluating the central role that slavery had in enriching Britain and how they benefited from its injustices.
We all basically did. We all live in a world that used slaves to build everything for thousands of years.
It’s actually so pathetic isn’t it. The self loathing for something that happened across the entire globe, hundreds of years ago, with absolutely nothing to do with anybody living now.
Looks like Cambridge is better at its own history than Oxford is.
Where does this stop? The people criticising them living in the uk benefitted from the slave trade too… are we going to dismantle the USA now?
This obsession with generational guilt is MENTAL
Why dont we deal with modern slavery first kids, its still happening…
Who fucking cares. Everyone used slaves. It’s all part of history now. Irrelevant and a waste of time to apologise for it.
Same when people apologise for the British empire. Pretty much every country on the globe has in the past waged wars of conquest, enslavement, looting etc. So what. The world has changed.
When will the University of Oslo announce a scholarship for White British students? As a gesture to the enslavement of the Viking era?
This political correctness is quite bullshit these days.
The slave trade has nothing to do with anybody living now. It’s just a waste of time for an ‘apology’ that is meaningless.
> and promised to expand scholarships for Black students
Because, you know, black people are interchangeable.
