Driving time map. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the highway numbering starts with roads (roughly) from Helsinki. So I drew a map around this to help with planning my holidays. Places are included primarily if when drawing I cared how long it would take me to drive there.

  1. In winter you can add about 30% for times. Speed limits are 80km/h where in summer it was 100km/h. Also, blizzards will slow you down…

  2. I garbled the title slightly: I actually meant to say that the single-digit highways start with the roads travelling out radially from Helsinki-ish, starting with *Valtatie 1* to Turku, and proceeding clockwise from there.

Some times may be a little off as I used Google maps to do this over a long period of time, and so speed limits will have changed in the meantime.

  3. I don’t know why noone has said it yet, but this is such a beautiful and neat design! I’m really pleased. Clever designs really do make my day. Thanks for this!

  4. It only takes 2 hours to get from Helsinki to Turku? I’m not Finnish, but when I look at a map, it seems like Turku is so much further

  5. less than 4 hours to savonlinna is rarely possible, you’ll have to drive topspeed a lot and not stop at all, that would be a bad and dangerous way to drive…..

4.5 hours is the minimum i’ve done it with no stops in a nice car and low traffic, wintertime, 5.5 hours minimum.

  6. From my personal experience I can say it takes closer to 6 hours to get to St. Petersburg, and not under 5. You have to stop at the border too, and there might be queue.

Also, you could add Vyborg between Kotka and Saint Petersburg. The only russian city that has Finnish shop names and signs and even some Finnish speakers 🙂

  7. Driving from Helsinki to Oulu, without too many stops, can definitely be done in less time. Superb map though! So cool.

  8. Most people drive to Joensuu via Varkaus when going from Helsinki. Driving via Lappeenranta is much longer.

  9. What a great graph! Have you thought about sharing it with Visit Finland organisation? As someone mentioned, many tourists may find this helpful.
