Liddle appears to have a shocking history. Freedom of speech extends to the right not to listen to those to whom you object. I see nothing in his past comments to encourage reasoned debate with the man.
Given that Liddle has previously written about how his desire to nonce schoolchildren prevented him from being a teacher and expressed a desire to view child pornography, regardless of his other distasteful views, I can think of few people less appropriate to invite to a university formal who haven’t served time.
In the spectator he once wrote:.
“the one thing stopping me from being a teacher was that I could not remotely conceive of not trying to shag the kids. It seemed to me virtually impossible not to, and I was convinced that I’d be right in there, on day one.”
He further opened an article in the The Guardian thusly:
“I wanted to look at some pictures of child pornography from the internet this week and then tell you all about them, but I couldn’t because my stupid modem broke down.”
Prof. Luckhurst ~~sounds like~~ is a proper twat. Surely if he thinks it’s reasonable to have the shit stuffed condom that is Rod Liddle come and speak then the students have every right to walk out. The fuckwad clearly doesn’t understand the difference between freedom of speech and freedom of consequence.
Edited to make correction as per Mecclt.
The problem isn’t so much that Rod Liddle gives ‘drunk racist uncle’ speeches, everyone know that. It’s why half the students stood up and fucked off.
The problem seems to be that not only is the principle a complete arsehole, he dragged along his wife for the ride who somehow seems even worse.
>But before Liddle began to speak around a dozen students, who had been unaware he was a guest, walked out of the hall in protest before others, offended by “transphobic and racist” comments made on the night, left during his speech.
>
>Some were then outraged when the college’s Principal, Professor Tim Luckhurst, reportedly shouted “at South College, we value freedom of speech” and “pathetic” as they left.
No one ever inform the college’s Principal, Professor Tim Luckhurstthe, that walking out is classed as an act of speech too?
Walking out so you don’t have to listen to Liddle is also an act of the sane.
I’m not the biggest supporter of our student union and their incessant quixotic campaigning but nor am I much impressed by Luckhurst here either. Why you would invite a gouty polemicist to speak after a Christmas formal I’ve no idea. They’re supposed to be lighthearted events where you dress up, pull crackers, get a bit drunk – essentially, celebrate a Christmas away from home with your University friends before you go back to your own shire. And like any Christmas meal, there’s virtually nothing less welcome than an injection of culture war vitriol. We have a debating society that’s not at all shy of breaching such topics, for those who do want to enter the fray. Let everyone else enjoy their turkey in peace.
If anyone wants some genuine accounts of the formal:
The only newspaper I feel that has the account of the formal the closest is the Palatinate. Of course the big papers are supporting their buddies Tim and Rod. As you can see in these twitter videos, the behaviour is far from what is expected from a senior member of staff and his wife.
