Ed Davey: Truss government is probably most rightwing in modern UK history

  1. Disagree, Ed.

The Vote Leave Bluekip governemnt under May and then Johnson was just as far to the right – just in the big state, nationalist direction.

This is more in the small state, Thatcherite mode – but still with the nasty xenophopic dog whistle.

  2. While the rhetoric is a little alarming, Truss really hasn’t done that much yet, and as she seems to be swayed by the last person she talked to, more time required.

  3. They aren’t, but even if they were that wouldn’t be saying much. Conservatives are meant to be a party of smaller, limited government. They’re so far from that it’s comical.

  4. Everyone describing flavours of far-rightism and claiming Truss’ piss poor Thatcher cosplay isn’t exactly that;

Boris was a populist (and a polygamist) – far-right flavours, and adding in a lot of Trumpist (see Fascist) flare, but he also oversaw the most “socialist” policies in this country since the establishment of the NHS (admittedly through necessity, but that’s how history will read).

Truss’ “I’m happy to be hated as long as I can bring in the same economic ideas that didn’t work in the 1970s, 80s & 90s because that’s what my donors/party members think” despite having been categorically disproven by the intervening 50 years is arguably the most hard-right thing to be suggested since Thatcher did them all the first time around.

She’s so far pretty light on the direct attacks on minorities, but it’s only been a couple of weeks and the Queen died – give the ghoul a chance.

  5. When a US president says trickle down economics doesn’t work, but the UK says we should double down on it…. You know where in a bad spot.

I can’t believe we are more right wing than the US atm.

  6. I’d still rather see actual strategy and implementation instead of Boris’s useless piffle.

  7. That’ll come back to haunt him when a coalition is needed and the lib dems jump in bed with them again.

    Or perhaps not

“We have to be on the inside, in a coalition with the tories to reign in their excesses”

  8. When Cameron left I said “no one can be as bad as Cameron.

When May left I said “no one can be as bad as May”.

When Johnson left I said “okay, really. No one can be as bad as Johnson”.

    ………..

Winter of Discontent 2 coming to a cinema near you. Jokes. Cinema’s are closed due to blackouts.

  9. They’re not even pretending to care about ordinary people. Every policy is blatantly ‘fuck people, help corporations’.
