Comment: why is the government ignoring the plight of first-time buyers?

  1. Cutting stamp duty helps first time buyers.

The reason why prices are high is because available stock is low.

Part of the reason why available stock is low is because there are too many incentives for people to stay in homes that they don’t need. Think of the pensioner in a 3-bedroom home, ideal for a new young family.

One of those incentives is stamp duty. If you downsize you gotta pay stamp duty, costing you thousands of pounds that you might need.

People moving homes is a good thing. Just like lots of people moving jobs is a good thing. It gets people to the places they want to be (near better jobs), which are normally the places where they are most useful (higher wages). Stamp duty is a direct dampener on this.

Just because the cut also helps wealthier home buyers, doesn’t mean it is bad.

  2. The new PM is just there to pass as many conservative laws as possible to protect the rich. They know they are losing the next election already, so the goal now is to just ram stuff through without regard for polling.

  3. Too many of them are landlords that clearly use their position of influence for personal gain

Similar to members of congress in the US allowed to sit on corporate boards
