‘Dangerous’ e-bikes to be banned from cycle lanes

  1. I love their optimism that the bill will be passed by Christmas.. last estimates we had was Q1 of 2023 so I’d live to hear their source.

  2. ““An e-bike below 25KBH will be treated effectively like a bicycle. It’s not allowed on a footpath but it can use bicycle lanes.
“More powerful than that, it becomes a motorbike. So all of the motorbike rules will apply.”

-I am pretty sure this is already the case, so not sure what the “will” is about…

  3. I doubt if this is brought in anyone will enforce it. Ireland doesn’t have a dearth of laws, we have a dearth of enforcing the existing laws.
Surely to enforce this you would need someone out with a speed gun hoping to catch people going over 25kmph in cycle lanes

  4. Most normal pedel bikes can go over 25kmph easily. Would this speed limit only be for electronically assisted bikes while there is no speed limit for pedal bikes? How is a regular bike going 30mhph safer than an electronic bike going 30kmph?

  5. I understand that they are a bit of a pain sometimes and maybe something needs to be done to regulate/control/make safe… but…

Is this not a solution to help many of our problems in cities in Ireland? Fewer cars, more active travel, less pollution etc.

Would be good to see some rules that ultimately encourage a positive outcome instead of just: new=bad=banned

  6. This is Newstalk so it’s an article designed for people who hate cyclists as a personality type.

    * Electric pedal assist bikes that have motors that help you over 25km/h are already illegal
    * Bikes with motors that aren’t pedal assist are already illegal
    * The Gardaí don’t enforce our current road traffic laws when flouted by any road user

This is unnecessary and any time spent on it will be time spent that could be better used actually enforcing the existing legislation to make the roads safer for all users.

  7. If they can’t even get people to stop for red lights, wear a helmet or have a light what makes them think they can enforce what type of bike uses the cycle lane?

  8. If it’s anything like the existing law banning motorbikes and mopeds from bike lanes, then it’s pointless because it won’t be enforced
