Finns know this obviously, but for people outside of Finland on this sub wondering why the went to Finland in the first place:
Russia is big. Like really big. There are two metropolitan areas where people are more well-off(and more anti-government), Moscow and St.Petersburg, the second one is close to the western border. When the news about a new pack of nearly wartime laws punishing dissidents as well as the draft broke out, nobody knew how much time they had before they get drafted or someone will close the border(for everyone or for draftees). All the plane tickets had been sold within minutes(to Turkey, for example), although there were not many to begin with, since half of the world doesn’t let planes from Russia pass anymore, and it is a long road to other land borders, crossing which could be hard too. On the west, other countries besides Finland and Norway had closed the border for people with tourist visas(most of the visas people from st.Petersburg area have) a long time ago already, so they didn’t have a lot of options. Norway’s border is way further and has some Russian military posts there due to some strategic settlements reasons.
The day before yesterday I’ve traveled north from the city center of Helsinki on a train. The train had had a lot of Russians in it, which surprised me – you don’t hear THAT much Russian in Helsinki usually. By the talks I understood that they were all going to the airport – a plane to Turkey was to fly that evening.
Go home and fight for your freedom traitors. All conscripts have made military oaths to maintain the constitutional order of Russia. Last I’ve checked the current government of Russia is not legitimate according to its own constitution. A young man should not flee abroad. Especially if they’ve promised to defend their people’s freedom from a unconstitutional government. I would not either.
Go home and make a positive difference in the world. Stop being cowards.
This comment section is hilarious. The political powers in Russia are extremely powerful. The militia is huge and shoot with real guns if necessary. You can’t just ‘make a change’ the same way you’d do in Finland, by voting or going on a lil’ march with a lil’ banner. People are blindly imprisoned in unimaginable misery in Russia atm for speaking up, they get sent to front line as canon foder. Putin is going to need to fail on his own, and a way for that is people fleeing the country. It’s embarrassing for him, and is a sign of Russians preferring freedom over his dictatorship. People are fighting him by leaving.
