Deliveroo lobbied Irish government against proposals to give gig workers more rights

  1. Next time you order a Deliveroo or Buymie – just remember you’re supporting companies that take advantage of workers at the lowest rung of society.

Collect it directly or at least use the restaurants own delivery service (not always better but most of the time)

  2. Is it a surprise that a company with a vested interest in something would lobby for it?

I’m completely against deliveroo but this is hardly surprising

  3. > Deliveroo lobbied the Irish government against a forthcoming EU move to tighten the regulation of gig economy companies…

    > Deliveroo said the “presumption of employment” contained in the directive – meaning gig workers are automatically classed as employees unless proven otherwise by a platform – could lead to “forced employment, reduction of work opportunities and reduced social mobility”.

    > **The draft directive, published by the European Commission in December 2021, would require gig economy companies like Deliveroo and Uber to ensure workers get the minimum wage, access to sick pay, holidays and other employment rights.**

    > According to figures collated by the commission, about 5.5 million workers are misclassified as self-employed across the EU’s 27 member states, meaning they should be treated as employees with benefits and protection, such as accident insurance…

    > They argued that the proposals would limit flexibility for gig workers, giving them less choice and making them less attractive to businesses. “This is not what the vast majority of platform workers say they want and it would have negative consequences for customers, restaurants/retailers, platform companies and the wider EU economy alike,” the letter said. “For businesses facing unprecedented staff shortages in Ireland the platform economy is increasingly important for economic productivity.”

I tried to summarize the article as neutrally as I could but it still sounds like Deliveroo are arguing the economy needs abused workers and that the company shouldn’t be forced to provide adequate pay and meaningful benefits.

  4. Ah, the transparency laws around government lobbying are paying off some bit. Now we get to see who is fecking us over instead of being in ignorance.

  5. Business lobbies for conditions that favor them…. In other news, one person found that believes all companies are sweetness and ligh… wait nope not any more. Back to you in the studio Bob.

  6. Let’s make every person a corporation and put them on corporation tax instead of income tax. There will be no government without that blood supply so no regulations 🤡

  7. does anybody else remember Michael moores capitalism a love story? You remember dead peasant insurance, the leaked bank memo which regarded democracy as being a threat and so on?

In the times when the wealthy regarded us all with contempt. Well they still do.

  8. Deliveroo are shite, ordered food with them yesterday, it never turned up, delivery person marked it as “attempted to deliver”, never actually called me. Customer care won’t refund due to driver saying delivery was attempted. Great experience for a first time user.
