Mandatory military service is a waste of everyone’s time. We should improve our military to be in line with NATO but this is not the way to go about it.

Sure let’s exploit the youth at probably close to minimum wage when they should be going to uni or earning their “first” money as an adult. Most people I know had very little added value during their military time except being drunk half the time and being bored the rest of it. But hey at least the boomers would be happy the “troubled youth” learned some respect and discipline

Mocht dit ergens combineerbaar zijn met studies/werk of op zijn minst goed verloond worden kan ik er ergens inkomen, anders lukt dit nooit. Als men van plan is om bijvoorbeeld een burgerlijk ingenieur in spe een jaar in een militaire keuken te laten werken, neen, maar als men mensen kan plaatsen in interessante vakgebieden (dus bv een ingenieur in een technische of leidinggevende positie) dan kan dit misschien wel werken, maar het is en blijft België.

How about they just increase the size of the reserve and get enough equipment and training infrastructure then. Conscripts perform bad in a war, professional soldiers perform well.

I don’t think the model of building a reserve army is viable in the modern day. It kinda worked a century ago because infantry was relatively simple and you could kinda teach someone to do it in a couple months. But now infantry has so much stuff for everything it’s impossible to keep a large reserve force trained. We also need to consider how militias were treated thirty years ago, as cheap disposable labour. If your goal is to build a combat ready force, you have to prevent the service of sliding into that.

It worked. His younger brother got conscripted and all he learned from this was how to be creative about sneaking out.

The old way of 1/2 years of service would be absolutely useless, but just getting a ‘mif’ (military initiation phase) in would honestly not be a bad thing. 2-3 months of physical training, some discipline, learn some skills that could be of use later in life, en most importantly:
Get the people in contact with everything the army has to offer, offer contracts at the end for any position available, and those who completed the mif and stay ‘beroepsvrijwilliger/volontaire’ can go straight into the specific school necessary to learn the fonction they chose, those who want to be ‘onderofficier/sous-officier’ or ‘officier’ go supplement their basic training with the necessities, and then go to their specific school.
And ofcourse, people that want to go study for a ‘knelpuntberoep’ or other important job (doctor, physio,…) should be exempt from this, they have more important shit to do than to go run around and dig holes in the ground.
I’d rather have it that they spend the money on education, infrastructure, social security,… in stead of the wages and cost that comes with taking forced recruits.

Voor de val van de muur in 1989 had Belgie verschillende gevechtseenheden in Duitsland (BSD met +/- 25 000 militiaren in de jaren 90) en was het Belgische leger uitgerust voor oorlogsvoering. In de jaren 90 was het aantal manschappen iets meer als 100 000.
We hadden hoge luchtverdediging (HAWk), lage lucht verdediging (Gepard), tanks (Leopard), artillery (M109), para’s, special forces (ESR/GVP) en noem maar op.
Toen in 1989 de muur was gevallen met een veranderde internationale situatie werd in Europe de NATO in vraag gesteld. Waarom hebben we nog de NATO en en sterke nationale legers nodig?
In de volgende jaren had dit als gevolg voor Belgie: Terugtrekken van de Belgische militairen uit Duitsland, enorme vermindering van actieve militairen en afbouw van wapen systemen.
Praktisch gevolg:
– vermindering van het aantal manschappen naar +/- 25 000 Manschappen in 2022.
– geen tanks meer.
– geen zware artillerie meer. (Ze zijn nu via UK naar Ukraine)
– geen hoge luchtverdeding meer.
– lage luchtverdediging Gepard vervangen door Mistral
– Flahaut wilde zelfs de para’s afschaffen.
Om toch nog een bestaansreden te hebben voor het Belgische leger en de NATO werden andere “objectieven” in het leven geroepen.
Je kreeg nu:
– Oorlog, heel intensief
– Peace enforcement, je heb nog zware wapens nodig
– Peace keeping, na de gevechten, een veredelde politiemacht
Belgie ging volledig focussen op Peace Keeping. Je hebt maar een klein leger nodig en de uitrusting is minimaal.
Belgie is helemaal niet meer voorzien voor een “oorlog” of peace-enforcement.
De artilleristen bijvoorbeeld werden omgeschoold tot “wachtpersoneel”.
Een groot voordeel was ook dat je geen grote NAVO oefeningen meer nodig hebt en de functie “militair” werd een 9 to 5 job.
Vanaf de jaren 2000, de meeste militiaren soliciteerden niet voor een job als real life killing machine, maar meer een permanent personeelsbestand voor “peace keeping” in het buitenland en/of hulp bij internationale rampen B-Fast.
De situatie in Oekraine laat zien wat er werkelijk kan/zal gebeuren indien het conflict intensifieert.
Voor Oekraine, mannen tussen 18 en 60 wensten te vluchten naar Europe. Voor Oekraine was de enige oplossing deze mannen aan de grensposten tegen te houden om ze in te lijven bij defensie.
Voor Rusland, reservisten willen niet ingelijfd worden.
Voor Belgie kan je dan dezelfde vergelijking maken.
– Belgische beroepsmilitairen zullen het leger verlaten indien ze schrik krijgen om echt ingezet te worden. Het materiaal is er niet en de opleiding is niet voldoende.
– Belgische reservisten zullen het reserve korps verlaten of eventueel ook Belgie verlaten.
– Tegenhouden aan grensovergangen van 18 – 60 jarige mannen door de Oerkrainse overheid werd door Europe met de mantel der liefde bedekt, maar Belgie zou het niet durven te doen voor hun eigen onderdanen. Om dat toch voldoede “kanonnenvlees” te hebben is de dienstplicht een prachtig middel.

Je zal altijd wel “burgerdienst” blijven behouden, maar die burgerdienst is geen recht. Moet goedgekeurd worden door dezelfde overheid.

but im 40 now and more reflected. while i still hate the idea of learning how to kill people, i think a civilian duty service would be very good for plenty. also its a good workforce in these times of crisis. this could be used to renovate poor peoples houses, prepare food, help the sectors that are under-finances like healthcare, justice etc
and insert socially some who are left behind and raise vocations maybe..

Much a do about nothing. Als ex-militair weet ik dat dit een zinloos idee is.
Defensie heeft niet de middelen om een hoop reservisten op te leiden.
Defensie heeft geen nood aan een hoop reservisten. Wat wel nodig is zijn meer gespecialiseerde profielen voor reservisten zoals IT (cyber), techniekers, mekaniekers etc… De meest succesvolle en gezochte reservisten zijn al hoog opgeleid via een burgeruniversiteit.
Mensen die bij Defensie werken hebben geen nood aan het babysitten van een hoop dienstplichtige die niet gemotiveerd zijn. Een militaire functie vraagt om doorzettingsvermogen en vooral een roeping.
Defensie heeft lang niet het budget om reservisten op te leiden, laat staan in te zetten.
Defensie mag geen vervanger zijn voor de gefaalde opvoeding van vele ouders.
Misschien eerst eens het huidige professioneel personeelbestand en materiaal op orde brengen alvorens deze wilde ideeën in de maatschappij te gooien.
Om zinvol te zijn in een huidig conflict/oorlog heb je nood aan uiterst hoog ontwikkelde militairen. Daar zijn trainingen en scholen nodig van maanden met jarenlang training. Reservisten zijn op korte termijn nutteloos.
Wij zijn niet Zweden of Finland, noch hebben wij een veiligheidscultuur in dit land. Misschien zijn er andere manieren om dit te veranderen.

From the stories I’ve been told, for many (most?) it consisted of 1 month of useless basic training that didn’t prepare anyone for war, followed by 11 months of inefficient underpaid labour. With super cheap beer available along the way, which set a lot of people on a path of lifelong alcoholism. These conscripts would have been cannon fodder in a real war. The jokes in Geef Acht, the Kiekeboe strip, came silly close to stories that older people recounted to me. The Belgian conscript army was a joke.
The mandatory military service in Finland and Switzerland is completely different as I understand it, there conscripts receive actual modern training. As a consequence, public support for military service has always been a lot higher there than it was in Belgium when we still had military service.
But doing it properly costs a lot of money. Presently the Belgian army doesn’t even have enough money to properly equip the small professional army that we do have. So at this point this seems like a useless thought exercise.
I think it would be better to have a reservist army. Also with clear requirements when it would be activated.
A) These people will be motivated to do the training and be actually deployed.
B) Except for a small fee (to value their participation in the defense) it wouldn’t cost much. A real salary (etc) can be paid when activated.
C) It would also allow the reservist to keep learning outside of the military.
D) It would allow the possibility of retraining on request.
But I think that before thinking about that…
A) Belgium should reach the 2% for NATO ASAP. Of course not buying armored vehicles that can only be supplied by 1 manufacturer.
B) A good analysis should be done, if it wouldn’t be better to buy military equipment as a group (maybe even Europe level)
Because having soldiers is one thing, you need to equip and house them as well.
Russia is a prime example how you shouldn’t approach things. So let’s not make their mistakes.

Je verplicht jonge mannen wettelijk dienst te nemen.
Je zal altijd wel “burgerdienst” blijven behouden, maar die burgerdienst is geen recht. Moet goedgekeurd worden door dezelfde overheid.
Als een dienstplichtige dan het land wenst te verlaten, hebben je een perfect wettelijk kader, desertie.
when i was 18 i felt very glad the draft was over and id skip military duty (i still think the same, i hate war and military, would have done all i can to get out)
but im 40 now and more reflected. while i still hate the idea of learning how to kill people, i think a civilian duty service would be very good for plenty. also its a good workforce in these times of crisis. this could be used to renovate poor peoples houses, prepare food, help the sectors that are under-finances like healthcare, justice etc
and insert socially some who are left behind and raise vocations maybe..

Much a do about nothing. Als ex-militair weet ik dat dit een zinloos idee is.
Defensie heeft niet de middelen om een hoop reservisten op te leiden.
Defensie heeft geen nood aan een hoop reservisten. Wat wel nodig is zijn meer gespecialiseerde profielen voor reservisten zoals IT (cyber), techniekers, mekaniekers etc… De meest succesvolle en gezochte reservisten zijn al hoog opgeleid via een burgeruniversiteit.
Mensen die bij Defensie werken hebben geen nood aan het babysitten van een hoop dienstplichtige die niet gemotiveerd zijn. Een militaire functie vraagt om doorzettingsvermogen en vooral een roeping.
Defensie heeft lang niet het budget om reservisten op te leiden, laat staan in te zetten.
Defensie mag geen vervanger zijn voor de gefaalde opvoeding van vele ouders.
Misschien eerst eens het huidige professioneel personeelbestand en materiaal op orde brengen alvorens deze wilde ideeën in de maatschappij te gooien.
Om zinvol te zijn in een huidig conflict/oorlog heb je nood aan uiterst hoog ontwikkelde militairen. Daar zijn trainingen en scholen nodig van maanden met jarenlang training. Reservisten zijn op korte termijn nutteloos.
Wij zijn niet Zweden of Finland, noch hebben wij een veiligheidscultuur in dit land. Misschien zijn er andere manieren om dit te veranderen.
The mandatory military service that we had in Belgium, didn’t prepare conscripts for modern war. From the stories I’ve been told, for many (most?) it consisted of 1 month of useless basic training that didn’t prepare anyone for war, followed by 11 months of inefficient underpaid labour. With super cheap beer available along the way, which set a lot of people on a path of lifelong alcoholism. These conscripts would have been cannon fodder in a real war. The jokes in Geef Acht, the Kiekeboe strip, came silly close to stories that older people recounted to me. The Belgian conscript army was a joke.
The mandatory military service in Finland and Switzerland is completely different as I understand it, there conscripts receive actual modern training. As a consequence, public support for military service has always been a lot higher there than it was in Belgium when we still had military service.
But doing it properly costs a lot of money. Presently the Belgian army doesn’t even have enough money to properly equip the small professional army that we do have. So at this point this seems like a useless thought exercise.
I think it would be better to have a reservist army. Also with clear requirements when it would be activated.
A) These people will be motivated to do the training and be actually deployed.
B) Except for a small fee (to value their participation in the defense) it wouldn’t cost much. A real salary (etc) can be paid when activated.
C) It would also allow the reservist to keep learning outside of the military.
D) It would allow the possibility of retraining on request.
But I think that before thinking about that…
A) Belgium should reach the 2% for NATO ASAP. Of course not buying armored vehicles that can only be supplied by 1 manufacturer.
B) A good analysis should be done, if it wouldn’t be better to buy military equipment as a group (maybe even Europe level)
Because having soldiers is one thing, you need to equip and house them as well.
Russia is a prime example how you shouldn’t approach things. So let’s not make their mistakes.
Actual conscription? No
Incentivized reservist training? Maybe
