This is a misleading article. In many cases “sewage” is just rain water beyond the capacity of the sewer network
The same people polluting the waters are the same people selling you clean water.
Also animal agr shouldn’t be let of the hook.
The EA are a joke of a regulatory body and are about as toothless as a meth addict. If government were as committed to environmental safety as they are with nuclear (I.e. the ONR), then I imagine most of these companies dumping would be tied up in so much red tape they wouldn’t even be able to get away with spitting on the floor
I worked for both the EA and Wessex water before I left the UK. At Wessex I managed the CSO list, the list of licensed overflows that we would send to the EA.
The EA would monitor the overflows, every time we used them and the EA caught us we got a fine.
