The poles are on the sides of the road all over the place. Cutting down 2 for this project shouldn’t matter too much. 👍
6 to 8 inches should suffice depth wise
More than that 2 foot at least….
Edit (2 ft in the ground at least)
The general rule is 1/3 of the pole should be underground
Generally speaking most commercial four post swings will have an in ground fitting between 700mm and 1000mm. If you want a two post swing i would recommend at least 700mm in ground. Telephone type poles can be gotten at PDM in Kildare but are treated with creosote which should be avoided at all costs. Most sawmills throughout the country can supply you with 100mm diameter softwood poles but if interred will generally last between 3 and 7 years before rotting through. You should try and source metal shoes which can be concreted inground to which the timber uprights can be attached.
I’ve built 3 pole barns in my time and we always set poles 4 ft in the ground.
Make sure to film the first few swings for
(what could go wrong)
Just incase the poles ain’t deep enough
