More than 80,000 people sign petition demanding early general election

  1. Tories don’t love the country as much as they pretend they do, they’ll ignore this as they won’t want to lose that massive majority.

  2. Nearly the same amount as ppl who wanted Holly willabooby and Philip schofeild out of jobs 😂 for cutting the queue to see Queen

  3. This is an old petition that the government already responded to. Not that it’s not still relevant, but the chances of the Tories paying any attention to this are precisely 0.

  4. I’m picturing the monkey’s paw curling already: there’ll be a general election, but the Tories will somehow win yet again.

  5. I’m one of those signatories. I don’t think we can survive another two years of this government. It’s truly unbelievable that their response to all the criticism they have received of the Kami-Kwasi budget from financial leaders around the world is to double down on their stupidity and refuse to make any changes. We need a general election now before the Tories do any more damage.

  6. That’s definitely a “good luck with that” petition.

At this rate, they’ll go until the last possible date in Jan 2025.

  7. Are there any actual protests or marches planned around this subject?

I don’t even know where I’d look to find that sort of thing, but I’d be very interested in joining any that are being organised. I’m tired of being politically apathetic, we have got to force change somehow.

  8. I already see them saying this is not the time to have an election and continue to govern without accountability.

The government answer to that petition:

“The United Kingdom is a Parliamentary democracy, not a Presidential one. Following the general election of December 2019, Members of Parliament of the governing party (the Conservative Party) were elected, such that there is a majority in the House of Commons. This remains the case. A change in the leader of the governing party does not trigger a general election – this has been the case under governments of successive political colours.

The Dissolution and Calling of Parliament Act 2022 provides that Parliament is automatically dissolved five years after it first meets (unless it is dissolved sooner), otherwise the timing is a matter of discretion for the incumbent Prime Minister (subject to re-established constitutional conventions).”

  9. > The UK is a Parliamentary democracy and the Conservative Party remains the majority party

Oddly enough though who voted for Truss to be prime minister? Just Tory members, ah yes very democratic

  10. Can’t wait for this to be ignored by the government. So far more people signed than the people voting for Liz Truss

  11. >The UK is a Parliamentary democracy and the Conservative Party remains the majority party. The Prime Minister has pledged to ensure opportunity and prosperity for all people and future generations

I.e fuck you we’re a democracy we don’t do democracy

  12. Ok, stupid question but why is a general election not automatically triggered when a PM resigns/is removed?

  13. I love the response “you didn’t fote for the PM, you voted for the party”

We know. It’s the party we want rid of!

  14. It doesn’t feel democratic that the majority of our Prime Ministers haven’t been selected by the general public. Nothing of what we are seeing today was in the last Conservative manifesto.

  15. That has to be the weakest response from the government. The last prime minister resigned in shame, the idea that “a change in the leader of the governing party does not trigger a general election” well maybe it should?!?

Soo the prime minister set out three early priorities huh? Well she’s fucked the first one, isn’t doing anything about the energy crisis other than making sure those who can already afford hearing are better off, and then there’s the good old conservative NHS promise. “We’ll make it better!” Oh yes by doing the same thing you’ve been doing for the last decade. Making it worse and worse, mismanaging and undermining until you can make everything private you fucks. Blame it on immigrants while you’re at it.

Also “contact your local mp to let them know you signed this petition” oh yes a lot of good that’ll do!! I’m in a conservative stronghold and John cunting redwood will not give a shit. That’s like complaining to the fox that you don’t like the way the chicken coop is being run!

  16. Even if you think this will achieve nothing, sign it and add your voice to the discontent we are all feeling.
The Conservative party might ignore it but the figures of signatures will speak for themselves.

  17. You might think this is a fairly low number in terms of the population but remember this isn’t far from how many people voted Truss to be PM and look at what that’s caused.

  18. Looking forward to the question:
    > “more people signed a petition than voted for you within the conservative party to become PM, any thoughts…”

Followed by a very awkward pause.

  19. Honestly Liz truss looks like she has no idea what’s going on. Those movies have script with a very bad puppet in a position. They didn’t looked logical till truss and trump came into power

  20. Yeah honestly fuck this. I know it’s “how the system works” but we can’t have an unelected leader that deliberately tanks the currency to a record low and then doubles down on it by saying “I think it’s great 😊”

If you’re so confident in your beliefs then send those beliefs to the polls and try to earn an actual mandate.

  21. I am trying to write a letter to my local MP but I just want to be a tirade of swear words in the. Fucking tory cunt.

  22. They’ll never call an early election. But we need to press this so that every MP that doesn’t vocally support one is on record saying exactly that.
