I can still hear helicopters, but it looks like the fire is finally under control. It seems a few millimeters of desperately needed rain plus the intervention of the army (or so I heard) has been enough to help the amazing efforts of the fire brigade and tip the balance.
My condolences to those who have lost their lives, homes or land. The land itself will take years to recover to the point of being usable. We’ve also lost a large amount of pino pinsapo, an endangered species of tree.
To those who live nearby or downstream from the area and get their water from wells (or by delivery as that’s often drawn from wells/rivers anyway), it’d be wise to avoid drinking it for a while even if boiled – large fires + rain can lead to some nasty chemicals getting into the water-table.

I live in a humongous pine forest near Barcelona now, has hydrants all over the place for forest fires. Doesn’t burn everyone’s house down. *Weird*
