**Belgium wants the Russian diamonds**
Russia hawks among EU member states have raised concerns that the latest draft of the sanctions appears to have weakened several of the proposed measures, **including removing a Russian diamond mining company from the list**.
Poland, Ireland and the Baltics have proposed introducing a retaliatory ban on imports of diamonds from Russia, where Alrosa is the world’s largest producer of rough gems.
The **Antwerp World Diamond** Centre said sanctions would take away some 30% of business and benefit rival trade hubs, adding clients should be allowed to decide for themselves if they wanted Russian gems.
Though Belgium was expected to lift its veto this time, diamonds are set to remain outside the sanctions package again, diplomats familiar with the discussions said.
*“Frankly, it’s ridiculous; the economic impact this would have on Belgium is nothing compared to what some other member states are ready to endure,”* a second EU diplomat said about the decision.
I feel like this ban would only hurt belgium and not Russia. Russia will be able to sell these diamonds either way, be it to india, china, UAE.
What needs to ne done is waiver Russia’s Kimberley certification.
Antwerp or not, no Customs in the World will let diamonds through without the Kimberley proof.
They don’t even fulfill the requirements anymore.
A reminder that diamonds are not worth their price. There are way more of them in the ground then we think, and we can grow them in labs. We have so much of them that they have to dump containers of them into deep oceans just to get rid of them to keep the price inflated. This doesn’t even have anything to do with Russia or Ukraine. Don’t buy diamonds.

Isn’t the diamond sector rife with fiscal fraud, smuggling and barely pays taxes due to all kinds of custom tax regulations designed for them?
The actual added value this sector provides to the Belgian economy is laughable. We’re a transit country. Except for a few people getting filthy rich, this sector is just a burden.
Also, fuck natural diamonds in general. Diamonds from every country should be banned until they actually start mining these in a responsible manner.
