quite interesting.. EU is looking to build a energy plant in the buffer zone? i find it hard to believe that the two sides will agree and make this possible.. but could be very interesting if it ever did happen.

if we could agree a bit on energy and get cheaper prices.. im all for it. A in for both sides no?

  1. Ιt will never happen and if it does the male citizens of the Republic of Cyprus will get all the cost as always while everyone else will get only the benefits.

  2. I am cautiously optimistic about this, both as a young Cypriot and also as an energy professional.

  3. if anything is to be built in the buffer zone, then it should be equal costs to both North and South Cyprus. everything generated as a result should be split 50/50 too and control of it should be equal (so either side cant use it as a bargaining chip or as blackmail attempt) . i think that’s fair enough. i wouldn’t trust “EU” anymore than i would trust any other country/party with interests in Cyprus. thats why i think Cyprus should run with the idea and go halves from both sides. ive been saying for years thats its stupid for cyprus not to invest more heavily in solar tech. its sunny fro so long that they dont really need to invest in really expensive storage (basically large capacitors or battery’s) solutions like other country’s do. so should be quite profitable and efficient there. im not an energy specialist but thinking about it with a physics background…. i cant see any negatives here.

  4. I am not sure about the south but, north cyprus has reached the limits of energy production from solar. There should be a stable source of power to balance the system at night. It can be an interconnect to European grid or additional power plants for stable source. Other than that, it is great news.

  5. As long as the costs and benefits are proportional, i.e. if we pay 80% of the cost, we get the 80% of the energy, then no problem.

  6. Buffer zone is land owned by Cypriots and not necessarily government owned. I hope owners get paid for abusing their land.
