My doctor wife and I couldn’t buy the house we wanted. So we moved abroad — and life is much better

  1. Wanted big home in Dublin, couldn’t afford it on a doctor’s salary (no mention of what he earned). Loved to Netherlands and bought a home in the suburbs.

  2. “Banker and Doctor smugly gloat about their idyllic life abroad and wonder why the plebs don’t follow suit”

  3. https://www.jobted.ie/salary/doctor

According to this the average salary for a doctor in Ireland is €134,131, if they both are doctors that’s 268,262. Literally 2 years salary would buy a house in cash, like no saving, 3 bed, 3 bath, new. Like I could see junior doctors having issues but any GP, any consultant should very easily be able to afford a home even in Dublin.

Even for context on that average salary they would be accepted for a 938,917 mortgage under the current rules.

EDIT: See the replies, the average salary I was looking at wasn’t really accurate. Still good comments so it’s worth a look even if I’m wrong.

  4. >to purchase what we considered a basic home in the capital or one of the commuter towns around it under the regulation that would have capped our mortgage at 3.5 times our salaries.

Doctor? Must be on at least 70k. He’d be on at least 40k. These are very low estimates, they’re likely on much more.

So that would give them a mortgage of 385k + deposit of 40k making a house of 425k. Things are bad but you can buy a nice house for 425k in the commuter belt.

    >It’s in Hillegom, 30km southwest of Amsterdam,

Kilcock is 30km drive from Dublin City centre.

    Nice house here for 420k.

  5. Sick of seeing this story. These people are not the victims of the property market. Their average home that they couldn’t afford sounds like it was probably in a very specific postal code if they couldn’t afford it on their salaries.

  6. Jesus the smugness is gushing out of this piece. Not one specific figure about earnings or house prices or the type of house he was aiming to buy in Dublin. So it’s a useless article really.

Is the basic core of it that the Central Bank rules are too tight? Looks like he expects a 4.5x mortgage here. Doesn’t seem to get the concept that if everyone here could get 4.5 times their salary, the house he wanted in Dublin wold still be unaffordable for him.

  7. Why do people get so pissed off at this?

I lived in Austrailia and many Irish lads would be mad to have not went there. I’ve met labourers with houses bought and paid for at home for preparation for the future…..housing crisis anyone….and Donegal lads who had absurd amounts of twin cams bought from Japan, shipped to Ireland and parked in Donegal for cheaper than buying at home.

I’ve lived about a lot too but if I was able to live and thrive in Dublin, Galway, Cork, Wesport, Kilarney the I would no problem. I’m not shitting on the country I love Ireland but it is fair that Irish people should be able to thrive in their own country at a larger scale

  8. The purpose of this article is to get hate clicks on the website. They know that shit like this irritates people and they’re just looking for clicks to justify costs for advertisers.

  9. I couldn’t afford the house I wanted either so I adjusted my expectations/desires and now have a perfectly good one. Life is not always about getting what you want, or feel you deserve.

  10. Not clear what kind of banking role he had but there’s no way the pair of them couldn’t afford something decent – either a 3-bed in a nice part of Dublin or a bigger house in the commuter belt if that’s what they’re after.

Completely fair if they preferred their options and potential life in the NL – plenty of reasons to. But they were hardly forced out.

  11. More wool over the eyes news article ffs

Like me marrying a girl from America and say ohhh we couldn’t buy a house so we moved back to where my wife is from and life is better……the title reads like that had no choice but to up sticks and leave…..till you find out she is dutch and they moved to Holland 😂

  12. “And I said doctor” well news for you buddy lost people in tech are making a lot more than doctors and doing a couple of hours of work. Rest of the time they are here on Reddit.
