Bonkers.ie have a tool for helping choose which bank depending on how many times you use each facility in the month – tap, pin, atm, dd, etc
Jesus even BOI only charge €6 a month
Not reading the terms and conditions of your account has crippled you.
CE schemes are a mugs game lad. Better off to stay on the dole.
Great to be poor isn’t it? One of the ways you get penalized for being poor but yet if you get over a few grand a month into your bank account you don’t get charged while someone on a lower income may need to withdraw some money from their account and if they missed a Direct Debit payment then the bank charges €10-15 each time a payment is missed.
That seems excessively high. Can you get a breakdown on that? I’ve two accounts with AIB, one I wouldn’t use as frequently was €11. Our main account that we use for all purchases really was €20, but free since it’s our mortgage account too. We have two cardholders on that account and use them a lot.
Are these fees for simply having and using a current account or for things like overdrafts?
Unless you’re lodging cheques or cash a lot, consider Revolut. Also check out MABS and your local credit union, they’re everywhere… much better attitude to members (not customers) than the banks have. Also, if you are Cork city based, I’ve just had a quick look at Google maps, I see CU’s in Bishopstown, Blackpool and lots of others. Better rates if you’re looking for loans too.
My last AIB fee was €21. Use contactless payment and there’s no charge for the transaction
Get yourself a revolut account and transfer your money in every week the instant it arrives in your bank. They don’t charge you for tapping your card so no unexpected theft of wages/welfare.
Credit Union is the way to do it. Walk in withdraw cash and use cash as its the most value for your money.
Thanks everyone for the advice, I’m downloading revolute now appreciate it
I’m sorry what the fuck are these fees?
Look up basic payment accounts, afaik all banks here have to offer them.
As long as the total amount going into that account per year isn’t more than what a full time minimum wage job would pay, you don’t have to pay any fees whatsoever.
Wtf. They are robbing you twice. Using your money for investments when it’s there and robbing you with these fees.
Off with their fucking heads.
I shopped around and found that Permanent TSB (account charge but they give you cashback for using your card I think) and the credit union were the best for my personal account. Switched to the CU, no fees once I have my salary paid in there.
I paid €13.88 this quarter.
I don’t mean to sound like a prick but if you paid €59 this quarter you probably paid a similar amount last quarter and didn’t do anything about it ?
You’ve commented that you’re just ‘using your card’.
I’d hazard good guess that you insert your card into the terminal and put in the pin, doing that costs 20cent per transaction. Multiply that by 5 and it’s €1 every 5 transactions, that adds up fast!
And It’s 35cent per ATM withdrawal.
To ease that amount of fees you pay you have to use contactless! And limit the amount of cash you withdraw from an ATM .
As I said I paid €13.88 this quarter , that breaks down to about 15cent a day for the service AIB provide.
Yes there are free alternatives like Revolut or N26 but you get a bog standard basic account with limited features / customer care, those fintech banks charge different monthly payment tiers for much better features / customer service and their customer supports is usually done through the app in a chat window not over the phone, I can see how inconvenient that would be for people who aren’t tech savvy or just have a basic mobile phone.
On the back of that letter you are holding in your hand is a whole break down of how the fees are calculated and what you can do to reduce your fees
Again , sorry if I come across quite bluntly but I used to get rode on fees until I done something about it and changed up how I spend my cash. Best of luck to you!
.
Check out the Credit Union, many have current accounts with minimal fees.
Call then up and complain that this is causing you financial hardship.
Also ask for details on how to escalate your complaint to your ombudsman.
Look up some tips online before you call. You may get some money back if you can make a case or can ask to come to some sort of agreement.
They can only say no.
It’s fucking horse shit.
AIB give 0.1% interest up to €8,000 and 0% above on regular savings account.
Want to borrow? It’s 8.6%
Want a mortgage? It’s 2.3%
Want to use your own money that you earn and are already taxed on? It incurs a fee.
Everything costs. Banks are fucking suck holes for money. N26 and other online banks are slightly better but slowly beginning to introduce fee’s too.
Permanent tsb have a current account for unemployed people/people that earn below 18,000 or so a year and you pay zero fees.
Strongly recommend asking about it in a branch.

I’ve literally never paid a single fee, don’t be a sucker. EBS/N26/Revolut combo
