Voting rights: ‘The foreign community is too big to be ignored’

  1. Foreigners often have zero idea about Swiss history.

Take for instance the case of womans voting rights they reveived in the 70s. With no insight of Swiss History, you think this was just because sexism. However, men were early on pretty supportive to give woman voting rights as other European countries did it, too. But then, woman groups, yes – woman groups, formed and actively and successfully campaigned against the right for woman to vote.
In a nutshell: In direct democracies men went traditionally into a ring to cast their vote publicly. The were traditionally armed with a weapon to defend their voting rights. Woman observed from outside the circle if their husband voted as they commanded. Woman showed dominance against other woman by ensuring their husband was voting as they decided for him. Giving woman rights to vote, did directly undermine their influence over their men.

So, it took quite a while until woman were ready to take responsibility and let their husband vote for whatever heck he wanted to. And when looking at the political decision making, it has not changed a lot in how people vote.

So, you could say now: Hey – that’s proof why foreigners should be allow to vote, too. Woman got their rights and kept status-quo. So, foreigners will also not be a threat to how Switzerland votes.

But there is a stark difference importabt to mention: Swiss woman have taken part in the politicial decision making process long before they had their voting rights. They asserted political influence by utilizing their men and controlled their access to voting rights by their own initiatives and campaigns. This means, they had already a deep understanding for Swiss society long before.

With foreigners, this might not be the case. Because they did not went through a process to gain citizenship, it is impossible to tell their knowledge and understanding about the country they live in. Same as you need maturity and training to drive a car, you should have maturity and credibility to cast your vote.

  2. We should either make citizenship really easy(5 year residency in Switzerland, able to speak one of the languages, without any fee) or foreigner that reside in Switzerland for 5 years should be able to vote.

More democracy is preferable to less democracy.

  3. I am a proud Swiss citizen who got naturalized at the age of 18 and all I can say to this is: hell no. Voting is a privilege for citizens only, like in almost every democratic country in the world (an exception would be New Zealand for example). Getting Citizenship is not easy, I know but it is far from impossible.

If you really want to vote, you will eventually get the red passport. If you don’t give a damn about voting then you won’t.

  4. Been here for some years, not my country, won’t be here forever, love this country, most other immigrants I know have zero respect for the country culture and way of life. Whoever is asking for this doesn’t want the best for switzerland I promise you that.
