That cllr from Galway “could face disciplinary action”

  1. If we can just park the issue to one side for a moment, that man, an elected official mind you, was *spec-tac-u-larly* stupid for what he said, just in terms of his own job etc

  2. I find it amusing that even though he could face disciplinary action and is making an apology for the statement, that it’s something which an enormous amount of people if not the outright majority actually agree with.

  3. I assume if he’s a cllr, he is supposed to number some members of the travelling community among his constituents? How can he represent them and do his job?

  4. Soon to be torn apart by Irish Times and Trinity College types who live nowhere near a halting site.

  5. Did an FFG politician actually apologise unreservedly? Without trying to find a way to blame SF? That is unprecedented!

  6. You can’t reply to the tweet he put out either. He got some savaging on his older ones after the interview got out! He needs to be fucked out. You can’t be having people like that in public office. It’s not acceptable.

  7. It’s a tricky spot because they absolutely were unacceptable but like the majority of the people in the country would agree with him. We think of r/ireland has hating travellers but I think the general Irish population dislikes them much more. Here you at least get people giving out to people who spew traveller hate

  8. He was fairly vocal about his pov which makes these scripted apologies worthless because deep down he truly believes what he said

  9. The casual abuse of travellers is long overdue to be put to bed.

Any other kind of sweeping generalisation at an ethnic minority would not be tolerated either.

  10. In fairness to Crowe , he called a spade a spade and was straight up as to the reasons for his objection.

Whether people like it or not, there is an issue and it needs to be addressed.

this is from traveller accommodation, less than 2 miles away from the house.

Understandably, local residents are concerned something similar would eventually happen in their area…… I have seen it happen all across my hometown, one difficult crowd of our country cousins move into one house, them and their countless visitors demonise the neighbours and make the place feel unsafe. Then the neighbours move out and the original group of our country cousins lobby the council to buy the house and make it available for another set of travellers, rinse and repeat.

People can ignore reality, but they cannot ignore the effects of ignoring reality.

  11. It seems shutting down discussion is the way of things now. Have a genuine concern or comment on a ‘hot button’ issue that is not 100% aligned with the current pc narrative (travellers, trans/gender, equality, etc), and you’re getting shouted down and shut up. It’s tow the line or go away. Why can’t we discuss and debate anymore?

  12. Michael Lowry was convicted of tax dodging and was voted back in because he sorted Mary’s son into the secondary school he wanted.

This lad has said something controversial which is agreed by the public (the president election some lad said something about the travelling community and was supported). He knew what he was up to. Regardless will be voted back in.

  13. So we are allowed to hate certain groups of people – murderers, pedos etc.

But when it comes to groups of people who make us feel unsafe and don’t abide by the law it’s a denial of reality and your a racist comes out.

We can’t keep kicking this can down the road for another generation to deal with. That’s what boomers have been doing to millennials with climate change and the economy. We need to have more open and honest conversations about travellers who go out of their way to make life miserable for settled people.
