It would break my heart if this was my daughter and no amount of party leaders changing would change my view on those parties.
So sad that this is becoming more and more of a thing, very long commutes and people living out of cars. Heard yesterday of a student in UL commuting 2.5 hours each way almost every day from Roscommon.
Mattress in the back seat. Nice!
What’s this thing of having your clothes hanging off one shoulder? Yer one from spice girls had the same last week.
It doesn’t state what she’s studying in the article unless I’ve missed it. I think I’d sooner transfer to ATU if possible than live in the car. I’d say it’s not a nice existence.
I know “to get the story out there” but is it wise advertising that this girl is alone and vulnerable?
Honestly, feel bad for students, yes workers are affected also, but students do have it worse

Seen this posted on Facebook yesterday and the comments were just ridiculous
The article is from a month ago and she has somewhere to live now
This is what happens when old people are allowed vote. They vote for their own comfort.
I know there is apartments in student accommodation being used by refugees in Galway. I think the government should make an effort to relocate them to more permanent accommodation and open up space for students
A student with a car. She ain’t doing that bad.

Explain again why colleges cannot accommodate online learning?
How the fuck is it colleges went online for 2 years, but can’t continue doing so?
Now one thing I noticed is that she only texted and emailed them according to this article. Ringing the landlords on the adverts is the only way to go. You will sink into a 100 other emails otherwise. These landlords are getting called constant and its someone on the phone who has the greatest chance. Your best bet is to be one of the first to get in touch and see the place first too. Tell them your interested right off the bat and reject it afterwards if you change your mind. Desperate times. This is a joke of a country we best remember this when it comes time to elect a new government.
When I was.foing to UCD I looked into converting a van into somewhere to live because repayments on a loan would have been so much cheaper than rent.
UCD does not allow vans to be left in their car parks over night I assume to stop students doing exactly this.
I just booked a flight to Ireland from Canada, in early February, so I joined this sub… ummm… are they places for travelers to stay in Ireland?
Interesting thing here is the article never mentions that she’s priced out of accommodation, more so that she can’t even get it in the first place. That’s not to say that accommodation is reasonably priced either, far from it, but I’m sure that when your alternative is living in your car, cost becomes a secondary motivation
She can stay at my house but Im in meath so… But id love her to stay
I saw this story on Facebook this morning… she said something that she sent over 120 emails and applications on daft and got only 2 responses… situation is just desperate, I finished renovations in my home last month and I had a spare bedroom to rent out.. I put on the ad to run overnight and by the morning I had already 80 emails in my inbox. By the evening I had 200. It is hard to open every single one of them and read and respond something, I just grabbed 5 random people from the 200+ all students coming from other cities or abroad saying if they don’t get a place THAT WEEK, they would have to cancel course or something like this…
Overheard someone talking about moving into a van this morning on my way to college. They were talking about how they earn good money but still struggling! These are really sad times.
On top of that, classmate of mine can’t afford to live in Dublin and has to commute but you know, transport isn’t our strong suit either. It’s so depressing. My heart goes out to you all who are struggling!
In cork ….. the reason students are forced back into college is so they rent the apartments the colleges built for them, this is a funding model for colleges, why aren’t the students marching to demand online learning like during covid????
Exact same shit happening here in NZ. People with good jobs sleeping in their cars and using their gym membership for showering. Same population as Ireland, with the same population of homeless people as well.
I don’t understand. 😦 I just don’t understand why you guys accept this. At least that is what i get from reading this subReddit.
Can’t colleges have their courses online too, so students can attend remotely if they want? The technology is there and is accessible to everyone … most office workers are no longer asked to be in the office every day, so why force students to have long commutes or even live in cars?
The whole situation is fucked up, but somehow this is even more fucked up: ““I couldn’t stay at home because none of my lectures are online and I have to be on campus for them”
Our country is going to be cleared out of young people in one to 2 years tops. How anyone expects a kid to stay here when these are their options!!!
Super important to have a semi-sexy picture of yourself so you get more attention and clicks.
Ireland is really becoming Americanized.
What happens, if this poor girl decides to go out for a few drinks with her mates, then at the end of the night goes back to sleep in her car. There’s a massive risk here that she’d also be done for drunk in charge of a vehicle.
What an absolute fucking shitshow for these students when homelessness and massive student debt become part of getting an education.
