  1. Is there any way of finding out how many Irish are fighting/have fought over there? I understand that it may be sensitive but stories like these of seemingly normal fellas ending up there are fascinating.

  2. Deepest sympathy to his family on their great loss. A life lived with purpose and courage and given freely to defy barbarity is a life lived in honour and the best traditions of being Irish. Fear don céad scoth.

  3. RIP So young – crazy that this young fella was anywhere near the war.

He had a CV posted online and his last employment in May 2020 was as a pig farmer in Denmark. Didn’t seem to have any military experience at all!

  4. A hero of Ireland, Ukraine and Europe. We hope that someday soon we can lay flowers on his memorial in a free Ukraine. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.

  5. “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends” John 15:13

    RIP to this brave man.

  6. Rip young man.

A sad waste of a life.

While I applaud his bravery and courage, I really don’t understand why he was allowed fight with no military experience. There are many places in Ukraine, Poland or even at home where he could have helped the Ukranian war effort better and likely who have lived to tell the tale.

  7. What a brave man. It seems a pity you can say so little about someone who has given up everything, but he was a hero.

  8. Rory was a classmate of mine in college. Extremely bright young man, and evidently a very brave one too. May he rip.

  9. Nothing but complete respect for him, he gave his life to help free Ukraine from a fascist Russia.

    RIP.

  10. I’m not sure why people say he didn’t have any experience of war. He enlisted in March according to the article, it doesn’t look like they threw him straight into the fight.

If he was part of the combat in Kharkiv then he would have definitely seen fighting prior to that, the troops there are not newly trained recruits.

It’s a tragedy he died, but I have tremendous respect for his choice.

  11. Shouldn’t have been allowed to join an international army with no experience whatsoever. People saying brave and courageous to me he was young and naive. Will this become a standard thing in the future where the young population go to other countries to fight wars? Shame he died but it was clearly an inevitable outcome.

  12. Rest in Peace brother. We didn’t learn anything from history that no one wins in a war, just Lives lost.

  13. Gods speed to ya Rory.
You’re not only a Ukraine 🇺🇦 hero but an Irish ☘️ one too.
    Thanks for your service 😇

  14. It’s an echo of the spanish civil war, young and beautiful men fighting for what they hold dear in this world and it’s very horrible that he faced this consequence.

It’ll be a challenge to explain to future children why this hobbit had to fight Smaug on his own.

  15. Sad to hear. I went to secondary school with him and he was in my History class. I was never close with him, but it’s still a shock to hear. He always seemed very troubled growing up, people from Dunboyne can back me up on that – but at least he died fighting for what he believed in. Have a lot of respect for his choice to fight to protect others. Героям слава

  16. RIP lad, big respect for going to fight for strangers for a cause he believed in.

    Love from the UK x

  17. No training or experience.

Ukraine should have never accepted him for a frontline combat role.

He should have been in a support role or humanitarian, which is admittedly not without risk.

  18. It’s sad, I felt grown up at 23 but I was just a kid. Hope his family is doing okay, can’t even imagine

  19. The man went to fight against an army that was committing war crimes and rape on the people of ukraine, he was out there for nearly a year doing it. you can have only respect, most soldiers in big wars never do have the experience for what they get into. He’s made his irish ancestors proud fighting against what they fought against

  20. I hope he found what he was looking for when he passed. I hope he found reason and meaning in his life. Where ever he is I hope he’s at rest. He was fighting for freedom. Man is a legend.
