  1. REPER MEP Dacian Ciolos said Wednesday in the European Parliament that the postponement of Romania’s entry into the Schengen Area is an aid to extremist and anti-European parties in Romania.

    He was reacting after a German MEP said that Romania and Bulgaria should be neither in the European Union nor in the Schengen area.

    “How could something like this, a country with such an infrastructure, corruption, criminality, have been welcomed into the EU? We don’t need Romania and Bulgaria either in the European Union or in Schengen,” said far-right (AfD) MEP Guido Reil.

    “I would like to say to Mr Reil, who I see is no longer in the room, that if Romania had not done its job on the EU border, he would have seen what <Far West> really means. Because 15 years after joining the European Union, Romania is still outside the Schengen area. Romanians contribute to the GDP of other Member States and yet they do not have the same rights and the same freedoms of movement as the citizens of those countries. It is deeply regrettable and unacceptable that for political reasons and due to internal political games in some Member States Romanian citizens and business are deprived of a right conferred by the European Union treaties (…) Any postponement of Romania’s accession to Schengen is a helping hand for the extremist and anti-European parties in Romania”, said Cioloș.

  6. Dude might be an ass, but accession doesn’t depend on the interior political scene. It depends on the country state. If it’s all it takes to get the far right in power there then it’s not a counter argument at all, Hungary is enough to deal with to add further problematic members.

    if being told no is all it takes to have the extremist take over then maybe we are better off with them outside of it. Which I’m sure is not the message Ciolos is trying to send here

  14. Given that the EP almost always breaks down by ideology rather than by nationality, and that ll of its members are equal, mention the nationality over the ideology here makes little sense.

  15. Honestly , EU and Schengen could use every country that is willing to join. It gives more different inputs to a union that is in need of decentralize and brings manufacture and shipping solutions to a post-china europe

  16. Turns out you can be mightily anti-European within the EU. I am as far away from AfD as anyone, but… who needs Romania and Bulgaria in Schengen? Protection from extremism can’t be the answer.
