Hallo Leute,

I’m having trouble finding information on this. Sorry if it’s a dumb question.

I’m moving to Berlin soon to start my Masters, and as an Australian citizen I must apply for my student visa/resident permit when I arrive.

The website ([https://service.berlin.de/dienstleistung/305244/en/](https://service.berlin.de/dienstleistung/305244/en/)) says that it is necessary to have proof of some form of permanent residency (WG etc) “in Berlin”.

I have found a nice WG I can live in that is just north of Berlin in Oranianburg. Would this count as an eligible location? I believe the town is still within the borders of the Berlin AB transport sphere and all. I imagine people do similar things and live in places like Potsdam but want to be 100% sure before I accept this WG.

I appreciate any info you guys have.

Vielen dank.

  1. The only thing that changes is that a different office becomes responsible for you as Oranienburg is not part of Berlin. Might even be an advantage as Berlin’s bureaucracy is known to be not the best in germany.

But have a look at your commuting way. Oranienburg is directly at the S-Bahn but nevertheless commuting distance can sometimes be quite long in Berlin depending on where you want to get.

  2. You do this work at the municipalities looking to your residence. You are looking at Berlin’s website hence they say Berlin. You can live where you want.

  3. First, as Australian citizen there is no requirement that you must apply after arrival. Instead you have the privilege to apply after arrival on a tourist visa; meaning there is no requirement that you apply at the German embassy in Australia before your departure. But if you want, you can totally get a student visa at the German embassy in Australia and there are various reasons to do so.

In your case, the number one reason why you might want to get a student visa before you leave is to escape the utterly chaotic immigration office of Berlin.

However, you found a great workaround for that: Register in Oranienburg and apply in Oranienburg.

The “Landkreis” and or the municipality where you are registered is responsible for processing your application for a residency permit. If you reside in Oranienburg, you need to apply at the “Servicepunkt Migration”, subsection “Fachdienst Ausländerrecht” of the “Landkreis Oberhavel” in Oranienburg.
