Refugee Council warns of ‘grievous’ risk to minors and women in ‘deteriorating’ accommodation

  1. > In recent months and weeks, the IRC said that it “has been alerted to grievous risks” and is “extremely concerned” about the welfare of vulnerable groups who are accommodated in areas unfit for purpose.

    >These “highly alarming” reports include child protection issues and serious allegations targeting vulnerable residents, it said.

    >The report warned that in the past six months there has been “a steady, downward trajectory” in the quality of accommodation from Direct Provision, to emergency accommodation, to transit centres including people sleeping on floors and chairs, to tents, to no accommodation.

Can we acknowledge now, that while opening the doors to unlimited Ukrainians was the most moral decision in isolation, the actual conditions of our housing and refugee system meant it would have been better for those to go to countries that could accommodate them comfortably and safely.

We now have tent villages and a refugee system bursting at the seams.

  2. Who knew this was going to happen?

Christ almighty the complete lack of planning by this fucking government is embarrassing.

  3. When this was being announced, the usual lot who come on here with their heads up the governments asses were crying racism at anyone who simply asked what the plan was. As per usual, it’s obvious now there wasn’t one.

We had to take in what we could, but the reality is we couldn’t take in what we did. Not without far stricter and progressive plans than they’ve shown a hunger for in recent months.

A promise you know you can’t keep isn’t kindness, it’s cruelty.

  4. The same people complaining about the conditions in these places are the same people who said we could accommodate endless amounts of people. The two things are not compatible.

  5. We’ve become so jaded and used to government failing us all multiple times a day that we accept this as a given. There are hundreds, probably thousands, of examples of administrations reacting quickly to an unfolding crisis. It usually is a question of money, and how much the powerful are willing to throw at the problem, and this is where we run into issues.

FFG’s neoliberal stance means they don’t think the government should be spending money at all if it can avoid it- unless it goes into the pockets of private business. And then you end up in this ridiculous situation where it costs more in the long run because you were trying to be cheap up front. The refugee crisis was a perfect opportunity to kill two birds with one stone. Build new towns in the midlands and the west to accommodate 100,000 people and you’ve drastically forced down the cost of accommodation and also found somewhere for the Ukrainians to go. We can’t build that quickly? Sure we can. As I said, thousands of examples of ambitious thinking throughout history. Take that levy on concrete blocks, apply it to all building materials, and refund it to the construction company if they work on accommodation. Now it’s more worth their while to do that than build another fucking hotel. There’s always a solution, but our leaders went with the classic strategy of just paying hotel owners.
