I can remember when you could get >$2 for £1, back in 2007/8.
This is what has made my father in law, a well travelled middle England conservative who retired after working in banking for decades, finally realised the tory party is a bunch of incompetent fools at best and a compromised russian asset in the worst of cases.
He’s seen this happening in the countries mentioned in the article and always laughed it off. He’s not laughing now.
“Brits today are something like too many Americans: apathetic, disengaged, they don’t seem to care about anything”.
We used to care, but the 24h news cycle has, just like the US, caused empathy fatigue.
Strong and stable. At least we dodged chaos with Ed Milliband.
Conservative Party are Economic Terrorists (see Brexit for more details)
And the next step is to pretend they are the saviours, dither and delay so the damage runs deep, blame Labour for offering their balanced solution
The Tory plan is to gaslight and obstruct and project
When the damage is too severe, they will undoubtedly use the Shock Doctrine once more, and shift further right so they can do much more damage with impossible Austerity cuts to NHS and UK services, and destroy Democracy more than they did previously
Don’t be surprised if we end up in a War (even Civil War), so that the Conservatives can win back some popularity
It’s really something when you’re a free market zealot and the market is saying you’re madder than Mad Jack McMad, the winner of last year’s Mr Madman competition.
Don’t blame the British. The current party was unelected!
We’re fucked until, collectively, we realise its the Conservative government fucking us and stop electing Tories.
We have not been a Republic since the 1650s and hopefully never will.
If Labour had said this about Kwasi they’d be getting done for racism.
That was maybe a bit harsh… repost it next week when it will be true.
It’s going to be a case of seeing how low we can go at the moment. Truss and Kwarteng are not going to change their minds and the Bank of England can only do so much, although markets are reacting to their measures negatively anyway. We will need a complete change in government to reverse the damage and it will still be years before that is fully reversed.
Kansas and Texas are failed states? LOL, now I can’t believe what this guy is peddling.
I’ve moved to the UK 5 years ago from Turkey. In this 5 years the Conservative Party reminded me too much of erdogans party. You guys might not see it because we didn’t see it too until it was too late. The referendum, policing bill, covid response, their response to strikes etc. It all goes downhill after those.
It pains me to say these things because I love this country. I love the culture, people and even the weather. Just read a little about Turkey before erdogan and after. It wasnt perfect but there were at least certain freedoms. Read about the last 20 years and you might see lots of similar things.
I’ve lost my faith in my own country. It took 20 years. Don’t let it happen to you. I honestly don’t think it will but I can’t pretend like I’m not seeing similarities.
Banana republics are so called because revenue from banana exports and funding from American banana companies propped up authoritarian governments. The UK doesn’t do exports any more though.
The UK is in deep shit but it is in no way a banana republic.

A banana republic without the sunny weather.
