‘Toxic culture’ of abuse at mental health hospital revealed by BBC secret filming

  1. The things in this are heartbreaking, nobody should be subject to that kind of abuse. Abuse is putting it mildly – it is institutionalised cruelty. I can’t believe such a toxic culture was allowed to ferment. Those patients have been let down by the NHS and authorities, hopefully they’re getting the help and support they deserve and we’re supposed to be getting from the start.

Hopefully the undercover reporter gets some kind of help too, it can’t have been easy to stand and watch – knowing you can’t do anything in the moment.

  2. I’d just like to clear up something that’s likely to come up in the media:

This is not ‘another winterbourne view.’ Winterbourne view was a private residential hospital, ran for a profit and with far less oversight than should have been required. The Edenfield centre is an nhs hospital, staffed by doctors, registered nurses and support staff who can be expected to have gone through NHS vetting procedures. Cost-cutting is half expected in a private organisation, and although it cannot be excused the sorts of things we saw there are much less surprising than in this case, the case of a publically-owned centre with no profit-making incentive systematically failing vulnerable patients in its care.

Winterbourne view was inexcusable, however this is a failing of the highest order. Patients should expect more from services like this.

This is not another Winterbourne View. It is orders of magnitude worse.

  3. It’s all very well saying the patients are ill, need help and compassion etc.. but the staff are only human and if patients treat you badly, you’d need to the patience of a saint not to react.

I don’t like seeing people hung out to dry – I think people who work difficult jobs need a lot more support and understanding.

  4. Another result of chronic underfunding. The decent staff slowly leave, and the toxic psychos remain to instil a toxic culture.

  5. Ok someone’s chopping onions.

That’s just obscene, beyond horrific. Fucking fucked up plain nasty gang of sick fuckers. Hope they get prosecuted and locked up.

  6. I will start by saying that I have significant experience in the field. So..
Uhm. Would those “carers” behave better if they had adequate training and staffing levels? Maybe. Did recruitment process fall? Almost definitely, people who work in hospitals as support workers should have care experience from somewhere else and ideally there always should be one experienced assistant, just to take on a role of a mentor, when nurse may be busy with medication. But, this case? Shit that was written in this article? NONE OF THIS FUCKING MATTERS. Those “carers ‘ are simply bad people. You should not be taught that pinching people is not ok, regardless of what’s going on – unless you are defending yourself and even then you should be able to defend yourself adequately without injuring and/or pinching patients. I am ashamed that those people work for the NHS. But. There is a big BUT. Why is all of this coming out now, when nurses are rumoured to be going on strike soon? Coincidence? I really want to believe this.

  7. I wonder if sadists are attracted to these kind of jobs because they know their victims will have almost no recourse, or if normal people apply for these jobs and then slowly morph into sadists.

I’m not sure which would be worse, honestly.

I wish nothing but healing and happiness for the victims. As for the perpetrators, I can’t say I wish them well.

  8. Worked in psychiatric hospitals between 2015-2018. If the general public knew the level of physical and mental abuse at SCALE that happens…

Nurses, Managers, Carers everyone closes an eye to the abuse because it’s US vs Them(CQC) and there’s no incentive in whistleblowing. What I’m talking about is ‘beating, throwing people out of their wheelchairs, forced cold showers, type of abuse

  9. This is sickening. These patients are some of the most vulnerable in society and they are being treated like dirt by the very people who are supposed to care for them. These monsters should not be allowed near cockroaches, never mind working in healthcare

  10. I’ve got a relative who was in that very hospital and I visited several times. I think the programmes seems like a misrepresentation to my mind, although I didn’t visit the same actual wards, but it was the same unit.

I was helped myself by Greater Manchester mental health services, and as I told them at the time, I can only speak highly of them.

  11. Having just finished watching the Panorama episode based on this. I am outraged! The fact that this has been permitted to happen in the first place proves that we have learned nothing from history.

This is basically a Nazi concentration camp! Something should be done immediately! This should be stopped by all means necessary! I am disgusted with my country today.
