UWE Bristol students quit degrees after university houses them in Wales

  1. Universities should be contractually required to offer all first year undergraduates affordable accommodation a) in a ‘campus environment’ (let’s say 100+ students in secure, portered blocks) and b) within a 20 minute walk of the main academic campus.

  2. Darn right. Socialising is an important aspect of the first year of uni life, that’d be difficult enough if they were the other side of Bristol, but in Newport that’s impossible.

The last train from Bristol to Newport is at 11pm, miss that and you’ve got to get a taxi or hope that you can kip on someones floor/sofa.

There’s a Holiday Inn in Filton, that appears to be unavailable for bookings, one would hope that it has been booked-up by UWE and not HMG.

  3. Similar problem in Manchester. Apparently they’re housing students as far away as Liverpool.

  4. Dealt with similar issues when I worked at University of Brighton – at the Hastings Campus. Imagine getting accepted art Brighton and then being sent to Hastings.

To be fair, UoB were very upfront on which courses were taught at which campus, but still, I had to sympathise with the students who were obviously disappointed.

  5. The uni could rent apartments in the Stoke Gifford residential complex to a small number of students with caveats and conditions, otherwise it would be chaos. There are lots of unused apartments there.

  6. Bath have got some Bristol/UWE students living here too. While not as far as Newport, commuting isn’t hugely practical. I did it for my masters (my choice) and it wasn’t hugely fun.
