Wetherspoons to close 32 pubs amid rising bills and inflation

  1. Wetherspoons despite their Chairman’s political views is a well run company. If they are having difficulty running those pubs profitable then I suspect there’s some hidden issues in play. Wetherspoons has the option of rising prices and remain price competitive.

  2. Never really got the hate of Wetherspoons they renovate generally unloved buildings the Beer is ok and the food is decent. The owner is an Idiot but I think you could say that about a lot of big businesses.

  3. My old local closed about 3 weeks ago. I went with some old friends for the last night and it was the last stop on our small crawl (kinda like the worlds end) and I ended up with 3 plates and 5 of the Corona glasses courtesy of someone I know.

Sad for the staff for sure. I’ve always liked spoons, even though I stopped going to them regularly about 5 years ago.

  4. They’ve been threatening to close the Capitol in Forest Hill for 20 years! Bet they turn it into flats.

It’s a massive old cinema for anyone who doesn’t know it. Haven’t been in there for years myself.

  5. They might be closing 32 pubs, but have you seen how many there are? Town about an hour from me, there’s 2 Wetherspoons, about 5 minute walk between each.

Alot of them could simply be consolidated into one instead of having 2 separate Wetherspoons near each other. Which is what I’d assume they’d do.

  6. This is the same Wetherspoons that had spent a lot of money on publishing ‘The Wetherspoons News’ as an attempt to claim that everything we’ve heard on Tim Martin was apparently fake.

  7. So, when I used to work for Wetherspoons (albeit 10 years ago now), pubs would be closed every year. The company would cut away the rot as they continued to grow. Although, I never remember them closing a number of pubs as high as 32 so.

The case of the Admiral Sir Lucious in Southampton. That’s been known to have been closing for bloody ages now. I was told about that closing about 18 months ago.

I’d be interested in seeing if they’ve opened any new locations at all this year to be honest.

I only say all of this because I’d take anything that comes out of Tim Martins mouth with a pinch of salt!!!

  8. I feel bad for the staff, and I wish them the best. But I’m so glad that this little man’s empire is collapsing – the way he treats his staff they will probably be much happier without these shit holes

  9. One of the pubs that is closing is in my home town. I was actually in the Weatherspoons on Sunday for a quick drink and there was only a handful of people in. The group of people I was with were commentating on just how quiet the whole town was. Maybe it just isn’t financially viable for Weatherspoons to keep this one open.

Edit: it has just been pointed out by a friend that the Weatherspoons in question has another Weatherspoons around the corner. Literally 100 yards away. I’m guessing they have realised that they don’t need 2 pubs that close to each other.

  10. Doubtful. Tim martin told us we would be living in a land of abundance if we voted to leave.

Seeing as we are all living with big houses with savings and a plump pension and 2.5 children perhaps even a puppy. All thanks to the brexit dividend.

I find it hard to believe that spoons is struggling so much they need to close 32 locations.

Fuck this guy. One of the many braindrainers who convinced many of the voting population that have voted us into this mess.

I wouldn’t piss on him if he was on fire.

  12. And nothing of value was lost. I haven’t visited the place since the time I went and there was a magazine of pro-Brexit bollocks on every table.

  13. Excuse me whilst I laugh uncontrollably, shortly followed by angry crying myself in to a little ball of frustration.

    EDIT

Want to clarify, not laughing at all those set to lose their jobs, just at Tim for instigating his own demise.

  14. Aside from that idiotic magazine on the tables, I cant deny that I like Wetherspoons. It seems to be the only pub left in the area where you can get a pint and food at a reasonable price. Theres a lot of jokes about the menu but to be honest it’s not bad at all and its consistent. Theres nowhere else to get a half decent Pizza and a pint of ale for £10.

  16. The end is nigh.

All it’ll be soon on high streets is Greggs, pound shops and bingo halls.

  17. Can’t wait for next months edition of Wetherspoons News, in which Tim & co blame Labour and the ravages of socialism for their company’s closures!

  18. Yank here, curious about pub economics. What’s the going rate for a pint of e.g. Guinness, and how much does this vary from place to place in a given town, or from town to e.g. central London?
