The biggest hurdle to this lobbying groups driving propaganda in the run up to the next election. Don’t be naive enough to think they won’t try and smear any sort of nationalised industry to protect their own interests.
And if this ever happens the Tories will privatise it when they are next in power.
I’ve had a lot of of problems with Kier Starmer lately, but if this and the proposal to bring rail back into public ownership are in Labour’s next manifesto I’ll probably vote Labour.
Edit: I’m just going to point out here that my constituency has not had a conservative MP since the 50s, so no, I don’t need to vote Labour to stop the Tories.
I like it. Use it to force the other energy companies to up their game 💪
Great policy. Looks like he wasn’t abandoning his pledge as he was accused. Renationalising energy companies would cost far too much. This is much more sensible.
Hoping to see all the “he doesn’t stand for anything” comments to disappear now.
As anyone could have guessed, he was waiting for the strategic moment to let the big guns out.
I’ve never been his biggest fan but that was an absolutely banging speech.
Labour look incredibly confident and competent now. They’ve laid out a credible vision and they really appear to have quality in depth as well, a really good team beyond just the leadership. Having Sadiq Khan, Andy Burnham, Mark Drakeford, Mick Lynch etc etc there in the wings is really important.
Labour actually comitting to something, never thought I’d see the day
Silly man. He clearly hasn’t thought this though.
How does he expect to funnel the profits into the pockets of his mates? (shakes head in Tory)

This is genuinely my preferred option out of all the possible options.
Thank fucking God someone in power finally brought it up.
Fine, fuck it, I hate the name but this is the sort of shit that ought to have been done decades ago.
Renationalising rail is also good, as it trying to sort out NHS staffing – although a) getting people trained takes years, so the criticism will start well before any fruits of the policy will be seen and b)ya gotta keep those staff in the jobs after they’re trained…
Hopefully they can make the final jump to renationalise energy as a whole too in the end
As long as they own some generation capacity, awesome.
I suppose it can’t go any worse than the other public-owned energy companies like Robin Hood. Mind you that was Nottingham Council and this is the Government so finances will be on a different order of magnitude.
This is the way.
Parallel public and private, people can vote with their feet and show what they really want, making claims that they don’t want publicxxx look silly.
A party that puts the focus on green energy that actually benefits people gets my vote.
My only worry when I hear this is that the conservatives will be voted back in in ~15 years and they’ll sell it off on the cheap.
How’s this for a crazy solution, and hear me out – it’s owned by the Crown. They lease it to the country for 1000 years for £1 a year and with it all responsibilities, with the only effective differerence or restriction being that it can never be sold. And if it doesn’t work it could just be shut down.
That way there’s no value in trying to privatise it and we leverage the monarchy in ways that benefits us all.
BuT hEs ToRy-LiTe.
Ridiculous amount of shit he has had to go through to steady the Labour ship, to get them to the stage where they are now, looking stable, confident and competent. How people thought he never had a plan when his plan was always to sit back, look sharp and watch the Tories set themselves on fire.
Honestly, what’s even the point if he isn’t willing to change the electoral system? We all know the Tories will just sell it off next time they have an outright majority, just like they do with literally everything else.
We can’t have nice things in the UK in its current form. Doesn’t matter if it’s rail, water, power, social housing, whatever. The Tories will flog it first chance they get.
Nice to have a politician who actually has the detail behind their proposals.
I’m definitely voting labour next time.
A lot of replies are making broad and incorrect assumptions.
This will be a new company founded to produce green energy solely from wind, solar, tidal, and nuclear sources. It’ll be focused on generation — not retail — and will be funded by the National Wealth Fund with an intent for it to grow to be similar to EDF, make domestic consumption cheaper and greener, and eventually export internationally.
I’ll admit I’m not a big fan of Keir, but I’m definitely on board for this. Recent times have shown the energy sector is too important to leave in the hands of CEOs just trying to get their stock price up.
The top mail comments on this story are still saying labour would be worse than the tories. Brainwashed little sheep.
“A fairer greener Britain” on the lectern. A speech asking “why not Britain?” in describing action to combat climate change. A plan for investment in green technologies. And this.
A common thread drawn through the day. You can smell the ink drying into pages of the manifesto. Starmer has finally found a core message.
