  1. Honestly if this country just legalised and regulated it, i can’t understand how they can justify alcohol the devil is legal and weed isn’t

  2. “Murphy’s address was not read out due to security concerns.” – why should he be afforded that? When Gardai take a case after being assaulted in work they have their address provided by the media. In the case here he did something illegal. I am pro the legislation of drugs but this is a huge conflict of interest.

  3. A few people have noticed the article mentions €13000 instead of how much he was caught with, €600000. The article should explain it better. It quotes the amount of 13000 Euro because the specific charge he pleaded guilty to, 15A of the misuse of drugs act is for amounts specifically over €13000.

Section 15 of the misuse of drugs act is the charge for unlawful possession of drugs for sale and supply.

Then they later revised the act and added a separate offence which is “15A” which is for amounts over €13000.

In simple terms if the drugs are valued under 13k, you are charged with Section 15.

If the drugs are over 13k in value, you are charged with a different offence, 15A.

  4. Possession of over 13000 is the charge. 13k is a threshold. Once crossed, you are eligible for up to 10yrs in prison. That’s the maximum. Its nothing to do with “keep the numbers down , looking out for the Garda”.

He has been in jail for nearly 1yr and he’s looking at up to 10yrs. In my opinion he’ll go for a least 5yrs because he had so much in his possession. 10yrs would be a serial offender with a long list of convictions, pleading innocent, no remorse etc.

The fact that he has a clean criminal record and this is his first conviction will likely go in his favour. That’s the same treatment we’d all get though to be fair.

  5. Judge Marin Nolan gave a 6 year sentence! How is that even possible. If he was in with the GAA and it was his first offence I’d expect a slap on the wrist from him

  6. It’s funny the drug that “clouded his judgment” is legal and the drug he had in his house is illegal.

“Counsel said that Murphy was consuming large amounts of alcohol every day “for as long as anyone could remember” and was a functioning alcoholic. He said his drinking had “clouded his judgement and brought him to this sorry pass”.
Sentencing him today, Judge Martin Nolan said that Murphy was holding the drugs for some type of financial reward in order to alleviate his debts but that “he should have known better”.”

If he was consuming large amounts of alcohol for as long as anyone can remember does that mean he was an alcoholic Superintendent ?

  7. Weed lads. I beside a shop that sells the same amount each month I’m sure.

What a pointless law. And I say this as someone that doesn’t buy weed. Ridiculous.
