  1. Can’t speak for the wider railway but network rails problems are mainly down to having no one with experience of the railway at the top. Hatchet job Haines whose only experience seems to be cost cutting in every industry he’s been in refuses to look at things like suppliers to the railway where we get ripped off for every bit of equipment a lot of which is utterly shite quality.

    You’ve got office bods with no experience telling you exactly how many people you need to do a job. Which is wildly unrealistic. For example they want 6 people to lift in a block joint. That’s 30 foot of rail that shit is heavy. They want 2 track guys. 2 s&t and 2 welders. Welder have their own set up to do measurements to take calculations to perform. S&t have their own shit to do disconnecting and reconnecting making sure everything is safe from being crushed etc.
    It’s not a wise idea.

    Then there is the problem with upgrades. One of the lines I work on has on more than one occasion had to rob a railway museum to get a spare part. We had to pull a guy out of retirement to repair some shit too as he was the only guy in the country qualified to do said repair work. Large parts of the network are just ignored completely.

    Then the fantastic idea of cross discipline working. Sounds great use staff to do any job right ? Yeah great till someone unqualified is working on something and they make a fuck up. The main problem is if I don’t know what the fuck I’m doing I can’t question if this is the right or safe way to do it.

    Then there is no communication between us grunts on the ground and those in their ivory towers. You know the guys with 40 years experience who know what the railway needs know how it works know what needs improved and what improvements will work but nah can’t have us having a say might not be able to pay a consultsnt 30k a day then.
