  1. I think they go with ‘without authorisation’ if the person was known to the car owner and the owner doesn’t want to go to town on them

  2. [That’s what the law is described as.](https://www.irishstatutebook.ie/eli/1961/act/24/section/112)

Yes in English it’s stealing. But for some reason in Ireland and the UK we consider it a separate crime to stealing anything else.

In the USA it’s grand theft (auto). As in theft because it isn’t yours. Grand because it’s over a certain dollar amount. And auto because it’s a car.

It’s legally no different if you steal $30k cash or a $30k car. Over here it’s a different and lesser crime for some reason.

  3. Definition of theft is to permanently deprive the owner of the property.
It was argued years ago that taking a car, joyriding and dumping it somewhere does not meet the threshold of theft as the scrote didn’t intend on permanently depriving the owner of the car. They can come get it back whenever they want.
So they had to come up with a new law (unauthorized taking) and put it under the road traffic act so it primarily applies to vehicles.
The UK had the same problem but they came up with TWOC. (Taking without consent)

TLDR: If I take your ladder it’s theft. If I take your car it’s unauthorized taking.
