That’s because these people driving away from police aren’t driving your 1.0 Fiesta that can barely reach 100mph. They are driving high powered cars which can do well over 100mph. So when they do crash it’s often fatal or they can’t control the car at high speeds and hit someone.
Weird that. There’s fewer cops on the street but more people are getting killed by them?
Did I miss something?
> It is the highest level since 2018-19,
Did anything happen to the number of people on the road in 2020-21 which may have resulted in a dip in the numbers?
Well it depends on why they’re dying. If the police are pursuing a car doing 150mph driven by someone who’s off their face on drugs/ alcohol, then they can hardly be blamed if that car crashes.
However it the police are knocking over little old ladies who are taking their time crossing the road, it’s a bit more of a problem.
Controversial opinion:
> The figures cover deaths of motorists, cyclists or pedestrians involving police pursuits on the roads
I don’t really care about these deaths? I mean, it’s shit for everybody who has to scrape them off the road, but if you get yourself killed fleeing police you’ve gotta ask yourself how you’ve ended up in that situation.
> as well as those resulting when officers’ vehicles have responded to emergency calls.
This one is more problematic, but somewhat unavoidable. Cost of doing business really.
Either way, it’s not a “concerning” rise if you read the article.
Were we not locked down for 12 months in the first year, if so it would not be surprising that the number has risen
> It is the highest level since 2018-19
Seems weird that this article has absolutely no mention of the pandemic or lockdown.
I’d be extremely interested to see how the numbers have changed since traffic police, enforcement cars, and the Police Helicopters were slashed in number. Fewer frontline officers and those who are on patrol in small underpowered cars must also play a part, assuming numbers of police collisions have risen since the days Cameron/May and Tom Winsor. The force-run helicopters in particular were a great asset with their local knowledge & ability to take control of and follow a pursuit safely without putting members of the public in danger.
Yet another thing f*ucked up by the Tories.
>At the highest level since the 2020 lockdown where there was no traffic
OH MY GOD
I wonder if less police to be involved in pursuit -> longer pursuits -> greater risk of death?
