Hi all!

I will be studying abroad in Uppsala from January till March and I am planning on a trip to Swedish Lapland (by train). I will be going to Swedish Lapland (Kiruna) mid-February. However, I am having some difficulties by finding a good jacket for my trip to Lapland. I am currently looking at this jacket: [https://www.protest.eu/en/us/prtadorey-winter-jacket-true-black](https://www.protest.eu/en/us/prtadorey-winter-jacket-true-black) but I am not sure if this is the right jacket. It has a water column of 10.000 and 10g breathability.

Does anyone have any other tips for budget winter jackets? (My maximum budget is around 200 euros)

Thank you!

  1. You should absolutely go but you are aware it’s pitch black then and no one is outside?

Plus side though is the northern lights..
I’d go to Abisko and join their tours up Nuolja Mountain.

Regarding clothes, it’s not one jacket.. It’s layers and plenty of them.. Most important is to transport moisture away from your body.

Friluftsfrämjandet has really good texts about how to dress..
But it’s a combo of wool and tech materials.

I’d checkout widforss.se they usually have good kits.
    But layers is a must.

  2. Depends on the day up there. It can shift from -10 to -40 in a night. But to answer your question any standard jacket is fine. A good underställ will do more than a good jacket.

  3. That jacket by itself is not gonna be hot enough for -20c. With the proper layers under it, it’s probably fine though.

  4. You didn’t say which country you’ll come from but it might be a good idea to come to Sweden first and then look for the clothes here. You may even find many items at second hand shops, or be able to borrow an appropriate one, but in any case Sweden has a lot of good outdoor clothes shops that would have appropriate gear.

  5. My best advice is to get good layers below the jacket (much cheaper) and then a decent cheap-ish winter jacket/windbreaker 🙂

  6. Water column is irrelevant since it will be below freezing for sure in January. Get a proper down jacket if you wanna be warm.

    Source: local.

  7. I would say it depends on what you are going to do and what you need. A Big floofy dune jacket is great at insulating vs the cold but not great when you are moving a lot a heat and sweat starts to pool up on the inside because of all that great insulation. A jacket with some breathing and some options for ventilation is nice for hiking. If you get warm from moving and its -20 and a calm day its not impossible to have sweat as a bigger problem then being cold. Aslo depends on your physice, if you like being warm and have a really good conditioning or you are going to be mostly still and have low bodyfat a extra warm jacket and thermo bottoms will be nice.

  8. Nobody is saying Lapland except for exchange students, tourists and expats… just Kiruna works well enough. Also just buy a normal winter jacket. It’s fine. Your not going on expeditions as far as I understand.
