  1. Actually there where many bodies of water in Łódź and near by. There had to be otherwise the textile industry would not choose Łódź to start production there. If there was no textile boom then Łódź would be some forgotten swamp in the middle of nowhere. But the extreme success of Łódź textile industry was the cause of all the bodies of water drying out. At this moment Łódź has only underground rivers.

  2. The etymology of Łódź reach the old Polish word “łodzina” – willow. Some say that it was after the Łodzia family crest, but the first guy having this crest was Sędziwoj of Lodz (Sędziwoj z Łodzi), BTW. mentioned in the document from 1271), so you have a “chicken and the egg” problem with that explanation.

  3. I am from Łódź and I can confirm that it happened exactly like that.

  4. Łódź has river Łódka

however now it was diverted and mostly flows undeground.

In Park Śledzia they installed a glass pane in the ground trough which you can see the river

  5. Guzik prawda. Name come from guy named Łodzia.

  6. I wonder if all the places named Hull in the US are anywhere near water
