Nuclear Power in Britain: Britain produced 60% of the world’s nuclear electricity up to September 1968.

  1. Thank god for green peace and anti nuclear movement.

Where would we be without middle class social studies experts dictating our energy policy?

Energy Independent and carbon neutral is probably the answer.

  2. New nuclear is twice as expensive as new wind power, and takes 10-15 years to get built. It’s part of the solution – it’s not *the* solution

  3. Thank you for sharing this picture. I will be able to use both the picture and discussion in the comments within my classroom

  4. Makes me sad we did t keep going. If we went wind and solar, the UK would practically be covered in panels and windmills and reliant on a battery technology that doesnt exist and will still likely need a bucket of rare earth materials and make the UK grid vastly bigger to be able to take the power from so thinly across the UK. Yeah its expensive to build, but lasts way longer, produces so much more power, way more consistent, so much less space and still zero CO2. Did i miss something?

  5. Everyone shit themselves after chernobyl let’s face it, as if UK nuclear power would be anything as unreliable as some sort of soviat shit grad nuclear. We have the greens to thank for this, could have gone full nuclear 49 years ago if we wasn’t such fucking pussys. Now I’ve got to pay a £150 gas bill a month because labcon won’t commit to nuclear because they only focus on short term political wins. Give me a fucking government that’s gonna build nuclear now ffs you useless cunts.

  6. if we really want – we could halve our consumption of energy.. all the SHOPS, public buildings etc etc.. KEEP their lights/elec equipment ON after hours.. thats easily 12 hours+ (at least) for each building (7pm – 6pm) that they are wasting elec..

In the summer shops could open late and not have to use lights, instead using sun..

also the amount of lighting in some shops is disgusting..

finally using elec. for ‘design’ which is also a waste.. (liek the OPEN signs on shops etc etc).

We could make a huge difference to demand..

  7. Gawd bless CND. Obviously as a largely left wing movement they did absolutely nothing wrong and it’s someone else’s fault. My guess would be the Tories or the bankers.

  8. Nuclear is the worst of all worlds for our kids and grand kids for centuries to come. We need to learn to use less and get more efficient at storing what we have generated from renewable sources

  9. These sorts of graphs reiterate why we need a state owned energy company.

Pretty much all of these are operated by EDF energy, as well as any new nuclear plants like HPC and SZC. If we had a state owned company that could back new nuclear projects, as well as renewables like off shore (which EDF also operate a large number in the UK), it would be a massive boon.

Mad to me that a French state created company like EDF has more involvement in progressing UK energy than any company in the UK. We need a state run company to compete in that field on the same level as EDF.
