Canadian soldier at Passendale. As far as the eye can reach, there’s nothing…just no man’s land.

  1. In Flanders fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses, row on row,

That mark our place; and in the sky

The larks, still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved, and were loved, and now we lie

    In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high.

If ye break faith with us who die

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

    In Flanders fields.

  2. If you want to know more about the Canadians at Passendale: don’t be like me and watch the movie Passchendaele. It’s terrible (apart from maybe the opening scene).

  3. Every time I visit that part I get the chills, no matter how beautiful the day is. It’s crazy to imagine the scars, pain, suffering and absolute void that was the Westhoek back then.

  4. There are vew things that make me feel dread but the horrors of WO1 is definitely one of them.

  5. My great grandfather fought in WOI for 4 years. Got hit by the mustard gas in his third year, was send to England to recover and was sent back to the trenches. All of his children either fought, died in camps, got shot / blown up or (one) collaborated with the Nazis.

My family was torn apart by the wars. Even though I was never physically there, the trauma of my (great) grand parents was pushed up to us.

These pictures send shivers down my spine. Thinking that my family risked their life to make that land green again…

    Lest not forget.
