It’s a nice idea but people will baulk because of age of consent and ‘it’ll just encourage them’. But also, diagnosis of endo and pcos young is seemingly rare. My sister was kinda diagnosed by a GP at 16 but I’ve since learned that’s almost unheard of even here.
If they’re a child they’re under the care of a parent who should be paying for it if they want them to have it.
Everyone always with the hand out for free stuff.
Im not on the women’s council but as someone who pays taxes, has no children that could benefit from this and as a man (even got the man flu today), only read the title of the article, I say they should as well.
Edit: I’ve since read the article and I still agree but it should include condoms as well.
Condoms should be free too, and I really hope the side effects of the pill are properly highlighted to girls that young by their doctors.
At 21 I switched pills and started getting severe mood swings and suicidal ideation. It seemed obvious afterwards but took me months of misery to make the connection and switch again. I cant imagine going through that at 16 or younger.
I hate the idea of sexually and more importantly emotionally immature girls having sex, but I’d prefer to see them safe from pregnancy.
Now we need to keep both girls and boys safer from sexually transmittable infections.
Free condoms need to be available for them.
Next they’ll be handing out gimp masks and lube.
[This is why it’s not available under 16](https://www.oireachtas.ie/en/debates/debate/dail/2022-07-06/17/#spk_194) – in short they were afraid the whole scheme would have been challenged. The scheme as is can be done without legislation. If they go below 16 they feel they’ll need legislation. That takes time.
It’s should be free period. Do they think people just wait until the law says they can fuck. Get real.
The weird Irish age of consent (16/17yrs) rules mean that it wouldn’t be legal maybe. But they should also hand out condoms to the buckos to help them understand that they have a role to play in all this.
I’m thankful for how my ma handled things when we were teenager. Since my eldest brother turned 14 she would keep condoms in our bathroom. Her reasoning was if we were going to go off and do something she couldn’t really stop us, but she could make sure we were safe about it.
Just make them free in general, along with tampons/pads. Condoms also.
Feels like the whole system in general needs to be reviewed. We are applying laws/legislation to in some places archaic institutions.
For some it’s taboo as they don’t like the thought of boys of girls having sex before the age of consent. At that age access to birth control is a negligible factor in if they have sex or not. Not implementing will not decrease teenage birth rates with the assumption that they take more precautions knowing birth control is not available.
Ina true feminist utopia all birth control would be free-especially for people at most risk like youth and queer folks.
That said, for straight/bi women education around fertility needs to be taught. There are lots of ways to know when you are most fertile, and I’d say a large amount of teens and even adults have no clue. Basal temp, the softness of your cervix, ovulation pain, cervical mucus, tracking cycle days, digital ovulation tests.
Once a woman determines what her usual cycle length is, she will generally have an idea when she can avoid pregnancy. It’s crazy to me that women aren’t taught to truly understand their bodies like this (unless they are trying to conceive).
Wish I knew before I was on the depo provera shot as a teen bc it really messed me up.
So many woman, including myself, had terrible side effects from the pill and depo provera shot. The best decision I ever made was to go completely off them at age 22 despite years of pressure by doctors to go back on for no reason. I really don’t think it’d be the right thing to introduce for under 16s unless there is strict criteria for it.
This needs a change in legislation to allow sex for those aged 16 years and under. Until politicians change this then contraception being supplied to this age group is in a very grey area legally speaking.
I recently started driving so am listening to the radio for the first time in a solid decade.
Jesus Christ I was fit to blow a gasket listening to the Niall Boylan conversation on this topic and lowering the age of consent.
People with stone age beliefs trying to ensure the rest of us are stuck in the stone age with them
How about free Viagra and cialis for men? Shit costs 5 euro a pill it’s rediculous. Even the generic is a couple of euro a pill. It’s also used to treat blood pressure problems so it serves as off label just like oral contraceptives are used for endrocrine dysfunctional issues
Their shouldn’t be an age on it really, if a kid was gonna have sex you’d rather them use protection then not. Also why is it only for girls? Just seems like a bit of an inconvenience.
I get birth control but condoms should be free in general

The pill has a really big impact on many girls/women, and tbh it might be quite medically ropey to start prescribing this to girls so young. A *lot* of women I know have gone off the pill for mental health reasons, and I’d be concerned at it being prescribed to people who don’t have a solid baseline for what “normal” is supposed to feel like yet.
Much better to have condoms widely available than to be interfering with girls’ endocrine systems while many are just out of puberty.
Que the far right saying the womens council are grooming children 😒
Why on earth are girls under 16 having sex in the first place?
It should be free for EVERYONE!!!
Is it not already possible for it to be prescribed for under 16s for “medical reasons” e.g. acne etc. ?
A lot of people here seem to think the pill is only for preventing pregnancy. I started taking the pill at 14 because of irregular, painful, and heavy periods. They regulated my cycle, reduced the pain and intensity. The pill is medically necessary for some people.
