I can’t speak for its geostrategic importance, though from what I understand that’s significant too, but in terms of propaganda having Ukraine would be a positive boon for Russia due to the amount of athletic achievements they have (the current heavyweight and longest reigning heavyweight boxing champions are Ukrainian amongst other examples).
Putin needs the distraction from covid and the fact that he’s loosing alot of support from the Russian people especially the younger generation’s.
