  1. Not heartbreaking in the slightest sense of the word. We exlusively hunt Minke whales which at the last count had a population of over 1 million. You probably think you are going to get a ton of karma from posting this here seeing as your account is brand new. I think you’ll find that whaling is not the controversial topic you think it is in Norway. Now go fish for karma somewhere else.

  2. oh boy where to begin

well let’s start with the normal anti-whaling arguments about it being inhuman and causing suffering and all that. I would like you to consider the life of a whale right up to the point where it’s shot. It is quite free roaming, as natural as you can get in our trash filled oceans, but free to live, mate, eat and go about its business without much, if any, human intervention. Now contrast that to cows, pigs and such that live in quite controlled environments ranging from mostly free roaming but captive in periods to straight up immobilization to min-max the ratios of meat per animal.

Considering all that you might ponder if whaling causes less suffering to the animal than any other animal exploitation we humans do. Now if you’re a vegan or vegetarian then i guess i can understand your viewpoint and i certainly have enough respect for vegans and vegetarians to not tell them they’re wrong for not wanting to eat meat, it’s a different perspective to mine and i’m ok with that. But if you eat meat of any kind then i’d say you might be pointing your outrage in the wrong direction and that it is indeed worth some reflection. I’d also like to point out the IDR (instantaneous death ratio) of Norwegian whaling is 80% and the amount of whales that escape injured is near 0, personally i regard that as much less suffering than your average minmax meat production facility.

If your argument is about preserving the whales then i’d like to point out we killed 580 whales out of a population of several hundred thousands in the atlantic and over a million worldwide. Minke whale is very abundant and the quotas are set to what is considered sustainable with a sizeable margin for error. No other whale is hunted in Norwegian waters.

On regards to animal intelligence then it’s also worth considering that pigs are considered among the most intelligent mammals, more intelligent even than whales but an international pork ban seems to have little traction outside of some middle east and asian countries. These are after all animals, with some level of intelligence sure but certifiably a lot less than ours. And i figure a long life free of restrictions and suffering ended instantaneously isn’t that bad of a look

now if you’re here just to soapbox and pull a “holier than thou” just to feel good about yourself, or indeed if you’re just here to bait up shit then i invite you to leave and not come back. We occasionally get people like that and they’re just annoying more than anything. (i am not accusing you i’m just saying **if** this is you)

And lastly i’d like to point out how one-sided this all is, i get the feeling most people internationally keep it almost as an article of faith that whaling is bad without considering the moral implications with regards to other animal exploitation. Also any counter argument to “whaling bad” is so quickly voted into oblivion on the internet or suppressed in other media that people don’t get to even be exposed to anything that might bring a wider perspective on the whole issue. Personally i try to keep it all in perspective and keep honest about the fact that i consider animal lives to be worth less than ours while simultaneously trying to minimize the suffering caused by my meat consumption. But now i’m monologuing about something different so i’ll stop on that.

If you want to discuss with me in an honest way about this or have genuine questions then i’m all ears, if you think you spotted a hole in my logic please point it out.

  3. More Norwegians should swap cattle, sheep, peig with whale. Its more healthy and better for the enviorment as there is no emissions involved in raising whales, as opposed to farm animals.

  4. Hey OP, on the first sunday of january we have our first “bloody sunday” for next year, in the Seal cub clubbing club. Would you like to join us? It really is humane once you learn to strike hard enough that they die after only 10 blows!
