Reeves: I’ll reverse abolition of 45% income tax rate to fund NHS staffing surge

  1. This is so frustrating from Labour.

Reversing the abolition of the 45% tax rate doesn’t raise new money. It just brings us back to where we were – i.e still too little cash to spend on our public services.

What we need are new sources of income to pay for the district nurses etc that they want.

How about raising corporation tax for companies recording profits of over £1B? That would encourage them to invest and possible pay staff better.

  2. “We vow to do the bear minimum!”
    – More inspiring labour promises

They think they have the next election in the bag, but they’re not inspiring people to come out and vote.

  3. We need far more tax than that to train and retain staff. Band 5 pay ranges from below to just above the median wage, all for a job that requires a lot of training, shift rotation and working in less than desirable conditions. Keeping people in the job is going to require some serious incentives and that means a huge salary boost funded by taxing those at the top a lot more than they currently are.

  4. Whilst lack of money is always an issue, the bigger problem right now is that NHS pay is shit for lower grades and you get more £ + better work/life balance working for a supermarket. My trust just can’t attract enough staff to work there.

  5. I’d personally prefer they close the loopholes and start getting the tax from big businesses that’s owed. They could do more for the NHS than the relatively few people who fell into the 45% tax bracket
