  1. There’s nothing “nanny state” about making advice free, clear and available.

    We’re not all permanently online.

  2. Libertarianism is probably the funniest ideology. It’s just so poorly thought out and falls apart at the first hurdle in every circumstance. Also those Ayn Rand films are very cringe

  3. Its funny, the original meaning of the word libertarian was referring to people on the left who believed effectively the opposite of what modern “libertarians” who appropriated the term believe.

Right libertarians distorted libertarian and anarchist ideas and came up with ideas resembling corporate feudalism where property owners are the only people to possess and be allowed freedom.

  4. It’s possible that a libertarian democracy could benefit the majority whilst completely ruining the lives of a small minority. however unethical it may be supported by a majority if understood fully

  5. Libertarians are sociopaths who have zero interest in the working or living conditions of those who provide the services on which they depend. Strike, strike, strike.

  6. I still can’t grasp libertarianism. From what I can make of it they want to do what ever they want without consequence, while preventing people form doing what they don’t want… oh and remove age of consent.

How is that a workable political philosophy?

  7. “Britain already has the most restrictive trade union laws of any advanced democratic nation. Between 1979 and 1998, the Tories introduced seven major anti-union laws. Measures included banning secondary picketing, outlawing political strikes, imposing onerous restrictions before strike action could be taken, removing union immunities, so allowing employers to bring injunctions, and legalising the sacking of strikers taking unofficial action.”

This needs to be pretty high up Labour’s rollback list, but – without examining the current platform – I’m highly doubtful that it will be.

  8. Who the hell thinks the Tories are “Libertarian”?

They are as authoritarian and dictatorial as Labour. Always have been and probably always will be.

The question has always been about whom the state will coerce and whom it will support.

  9. The core of conservatism is to have two groups, one protected by the law but not constrained by it and the other constrained by the law but not protected by it. It’s not a small state, it’s one that applies law unequally depending on who you are.

  10. *Libertarians are like house cats: absolutely convinced of their fierce independence and self reliance while utterly dependent on a system they don’t appreciate or understand.*

  11. British libertarians are the opposite of American libertarians.

American libertarians are ultra left anarchists, I am a Brit in the US. Most the people in my workplace are libertarians. Anti government, tax is theft, legalization of all drugs, be whoever you want to be just don’t force it on others. If a crime was committed and there was no victim, then there was no crime.

  12. *Freedom for me but not for thee* is the libertarian way. They don’t understand that their freedom restricts and infringes on others freedoms. Its like its based on the early days of the Europeans settling in the Americas where land and resources were plentiful and you could sit in your field shooting anything that moves and dig as many holes as you like, then go sell your goods at the market.

  13. If we consider Universal Credit for a moment, the most incredible piece of overarching state intrusion into people’s lives that we have probably ever seen in the UK.

The Conservatives having first run down the economy, forcing working people onto benefits, such people then get told how they should be living their lives and how they have the wrong job…
