Austria elections: President Van der Bellen reelected, projections show

  1. Not a suprise considering the guy was leading in his worst polls that was done by rivals by 35 percent. In more independent polls he was leading by 56 percent.

    The role is only ‘ceremonial’ in times of fair weather, when the political landscape is stable and nothing exceptional happens.

    In the history of Austria, Van der Bellen is the first president who was forced to actually use some of the more disruptive presidential powers. He ousted an entire government, and later had to forcibly execute a decision by the Supreme Court, because a meber of the government refused to comply. The fact that he did those things in an orderly and measured fashion bought him an enormous amount of trust.

  3. shame. He’s already mentally declining. In my opinion there should be a maximum age of 70 (assumption) or a maximum of 80 by term’s end for high offices of state. We have a minimum age because we recognize young people lack experience but why don’t we recognize old people are subject to cognitive decline?
