Why is this sign legal in Belgium? It specifies distance, it’s a speed limit sign.(Same for 30/50/70/90)

  1. It doesn’t specify distance, the fact that it is indeed a speed limit sign should be enough to insinuate that it refers to speed rather than distance.

Alternatively you’d have either km/h or km/u depending on region, but that would be even more confusing.

  2. If you want I can explain to you what they mean? It means maximum 50 km/h or 50km/u if you want, but because of space constraints they assume people aren’t idiots and just put km.

Never saw anyone think they’d mean maximum 50 km’s to drive though, you’re the first I’ve met, congrats! 🙂

  3. I’ve never seen a speed sign with ‘km’ on it. I do admit it is slightly awkward, I might have been pausing for a minute upon first seeing it.

Not the most nonsensical or plain wrong thing I’ve encountered so far. I’ll understand it.

  4. I can’t hink of many reasons… One being complexity of the sign. If it has more characters then the bare minimum then it may be overcrowded causing drivers to watch to long and not look forward. As for the km, that is to make plain clear that the measurement in NOT in imperial system but metric system. (Aka not miles but kilometer).

As for the previous argument of just stating 50? Ye, same as what i mentioned above. In addition to pull the teachers old boring comments, 50 what? Meters?

It’s a SPEED SIGN so you know full well IT IS SPEED AND NOT DISTANCE. Also most autistic people i know find that it makes perfect sense.

Also keep in mind that not everyone can read roadsigns as quickly. Some people, like me actually read EXTREMELY SLOW due to something which can be caused by for example DYSLEXIA.

Thank you for your time reading this, have a nice day!

  5. I rather have the signs indicate a meters per second unit instead of kilometers per hour , much easier to read 🌝

  6. See, it may even be a board that says “second coming of jesus”.
If the law says this board means you can only drive 50, you can only drive 50.
If you do not understand i am not sure you should keep that license.

  7. We belgians love to make stuff extra complicated.

In some countries you have problems and solutions.
In Belgium the solution results in more discussions which in turn results in more problems

  8. This was indeed wrongfully used in the past, new signs don’t use this anymore and just show the digits. There might still be some old signs around that use this though. You could try to see if this error can get your speed tickets cancelled in court 😁

  9. On my way to work (in Oudenaarde) there’s this hillside road with this exact sign splattered across road. But what’s confusing is you’re buiten de bebouwde kom and even google maps speed limit indicator shows 70km/u until you’re in de bebouwde kom. 🤷‍♂️
